Hello all,
I'm looking for the marriage of James WELCH and Mary ?, probably in South Mimms, around 1810, as well as James's burial. Their first known child, James, was christened in South Mimms in 1811 and all subsequent children were christened there too.
I've searched online sources for the marriage, including the IGI and the Middlesex Parish Records page linked to on the "Resources" board, but no luck. I don't know where to look for a burial for James - FreeBMD has several James WELCH deaths between 1837 and 1841, but none look really promising.
Mary and children are in South Mimms on Mutton Lane in 1841, by which time James has died. As the last child was born about 1835, this narrows down a possible date of death for James to between 1834 and 1841.
Mary was born in Harlington, Bedfordshire, but I notice that there are a number of WELCHes living in South Mimms around 1800, so I'm assuming that she married James there.
Can anyone help please?
Many thanks!

Hi Prue,
Not sure if I can be of any help or not, but I actually live in South Mimms. It's only a small village but there is a fantastic church there, St.Giles in Blanche Lane. There is another church St.Mary's not too far away in Ridge.
If the weather isn't too bad tomorrow, I'll go and take a look around the cemetry for you. A lot of the older graves are very over grown with ivy, so fingers crossed.
Mutton Lane is the main road that leads in to Potters Bar and I know in the really early days that sometimes South Mimms also covered the Potters Bar area.
If I find any graves I'll take pictures for you.
Jan

Hi Jan, That would be wonderful! I hope the weather is nice for your jaunt, have a lovely time and thank you so much for having a look. I had worked out, through tracing this family, that Potter's Bar and South Mimms were very close together, as the family use both interchangeably. I understand South Mimms also flitted between Herts and Middx, which makes thinks even more "interesting"! Thanks! Prue
