dreamweaver to web - help please
« on: Friday 30 December 05 13:50 GMT (UK) »

I`m trying to get my first web page (I`ve only got one ready so far - to test) from dreamweaver to my rootschat web site. I`ve got myself in such a muddle and I really need some help.

When I check (by putting my web address into the address bar at the top of the screen) to see if anything has happened it says "page cannot be found".

I have deleted the rootschat holding page, checked my firewall.
I want to be able to make sitewide changes (css) from my pc - do I still need CoffeeCup?

I think I should have added that when I do a test connection from the dreamweaver site definition, an error message comes up : an FTP error occurred, cannot open remote folder, access denied, file may not exist or could be a connection problem

Not sure if this is helpful.

Hi sheddyg,

the RootsChat webspace expects a start-page called index.htm or index.html.

Some web programs have their own names.  Check if yours has the right name, and if not, whether there is an option to name it index.htm or .html

Thanks Bob and Biker.

I did not understand about naming the start page "indexhtm". Anyway its been renamed and I can now see my web page. Only thing is though, it looks absolutely NOTHING like the page I designed! No colours and the design all over the place. I don`t understand it - as it looks fine when I check it in the browser, and I took weeks following and copying a tutorial on designing with css that I got from the macromedia dreamweaver website.

I`m slowly losing the will with this...

Hello again

If you're using CSS as a beginner I'm not surprised there is a hitch or two, it's one of the more difficult aspects of webdesign to get the hang of - most people don't use them for that reason. Don't give up though!

Can you give me the url to your webpage and I'll have a look at it if you like.

Regards

Just a thought ...  checking out the most common faults ...

I checked the source code (in browser, right mouse click and "Show Source") and notice you are using a css file genealogycss.css

did you remember to upload this file too  Smiley
