Hello aderyn,

I looked for the name McEllin in Griffiths Valuation extracts 1848-64 which are on John Hayes failteromhat.com website. There were none listed in Galway but there were families in Mayo and Tyrone

Michael Mc Ellin, Village of Manulla, Manulla. Mayo
John McKellin, Aghnagreggan, Termonmaguirk. Tyrone

Thank you Christopher for your reply, my G.G.Grandfather was John McEllin from C.Mayo he was aged 36 on the 1851 census and living in Leicester with his wife Margaret  and their three children. His was a rag and bone collector-hawker. One of their children was my G.Grandmother and she was born in Newcastle, Staffordshire in 1843.
Thank you
Angela.
