MI's in St Mary - Horsham
« on: Sunday 01 January 06 16:55 UTC (UK) »

Hi Sussex Rootschatters

Prior to the construction of a New Vestry to St Mary’s Church in Horsham in 2003, I was commissioned to record the graves and grave sites that were to be removed, following the guidelines as set down by the Council for British Archaeology (CBA) and using their own memorial recording form (re-written for the computer) and drawing a new revised plan to a scale of 1:100 of the monuments within the proposed construction area.

Wherever possible, the visible inscriptions on the stones were recorded and compared against the survey commissioned by the Horsham Urban Council and undertaken by Donald Slyfield in 1952. – but it was found that the details contained within that 1952 survey were very basic, very often only recording the name, year and age at death. Several stones that were illegible in 1952 have produced inscriptions in 2003 by using different lighting conditions and techniques.

A list of the 640 Surnames from that 1952 Survey has now been added to my 1066 Genealogy Website under 'Sussex Archives / Horsham - St Mary MI's.  If a surname you are researching is on that list, I would be happy to give you further information.

www.rootschat.com/history/hastings

The most common surname is 'Lintott' which appears 23 times on 12 different memorials.

Top  names are:
1. Lintott
2. Kil(l)ner
3. Rowland
4. Mitchell
5. Charman

Hello Chris, I'd be very grateful for the Charman MIs from Horsham St Mary. i'm working my way through the burials and trying to work out where they fit in the Charman tribe, but it would be really useful to know who is buried with who.

Hi Colin

Just had a quick look at my Database of Horsham and there are 7 stones that contain CHARMAN information

No 40, 529, 1004. 1005, 1007, 1021 and 1023

Will be posting details in a few moments when I have done my chores

Colin

My apologies for the lack of information from these stones - but as I put in an earlier post: the original survey commissioned by the Horsham Urban Council and undertaken by Donald Slyfield in 1952. – was found to be very basic and the details contained within that 1952 survey often only recorded  the name, year and age at death.

No 40:
CHARMAN Henry, 1781

No 529:
CHARMAN ?

No 1004:
CHARMAN Mary, wife of James, 18th September 1837, aged 61 Years.

No 1005:
CHARMAN, late of 'Crab Tree' (L.B.) 9th April 1813, Aged 66 years and
wife Jane, 21st May 1837, aged 89 years

Next door to the above stone is a footstone (No 1006) that has on it
A.C 1804; T.C. 18??  - it could another Charman grave, but the headstone has gone.

The rest will follow in a few moments

Colin

No 1007:
CHARMAN  Jane, daughter of James and Mary, 11th October 1827 aged 15 years

1021:
CHARMAN Elizabeth, daughter of Elizabeth & James,

A buried Footstone (No 1022) - quite possible it is Charman

No 1023:
CHARMAN Thomas, son of James and Mary, 19th August 1831, aged 18 years

Sorry, but that is all the info that I have

I hope it helps in your research

Please could you look up George about 1879 and Harriet Mitchell about 1850. I'm sure I saw their grave(s) near a huge yew once when in Horsham but it didn't sink in then that they were mine. I would appreciate it if you could check for me.

Hi Painterlady

There are 6 Mitchell Stones in Horsham, St Mary, but unfortunately I dont think that any match your criteria; although possibly No 449 looks promising.

No 183: MITCHELL Lucy, Wife of John and Daughter of Hugh & Elizabeth Orlton
No 447: MITCHELL Edward, son of Samuel and Phoebe, 1822
No 448: MITCHELL Samuel, son of above, 1833
No 449: MITCHELL Harriett, wife of Isaac, 4th August 1850 and Daughter Ann, 1857
No 919: MITCHELL John, son of Edward and Catherine, 1813 or 1815, aged 66
No 1146: MITCHELL Matthew, 2nd November 1880, aged 65 years

Hope the above may help your research
