Celia, thank you for your kind offer. This is a bit of a long shot but I'm absolutely stuck on this family from the 1861 census...
Ellen MILLER and her cousin Alexander JAFFRAY were supposed to be born in Chester about 1860. The Blacksmith is missing - I suspect his name might be John.
1861 Wales Census - RG9/2634 F.18 P.31 Roberts's Row, Saltney, Flintshire
Agnes MILLER - Wife - Mar - 30 - Blacksmith's Wife - b. Scotland John MILLER - Son - 11 - b. Scotland Robert MILLER - Son - 9 - b. Scotland Agnes MILLER - Dau - 3 - b. Scotland Ellen MILLER - Dau - 1 - b. Chester Alexander JAFFRAY - Nephew - 1 - b. Chester William Craig - Lodger - Un - 23 - Plumber - b. Scotland John Gallachar - Lodger - Un - 26 - Blacksmiths Lab - b. Ireland
Thank you for anything you can find.
Regards, John

Hello John I can only find one person at a time in the Postal directoriesThey are as my brother mentioned a form of Phone Book. Except they are address books where letters would be sent to the occupier.Who would you like me to find ?and what years do you want me to trace this person to/from. To find out where they lived and the jobs they had in between the census. Do you have an idea of where they lived (area) I can only look for adults
P.S If you go to my Rake lane topic you will see,on the last page i think.my finding for Keogh. That will gve you an idia of what i mean.

Hello Celia,
Could you please look for John MILLER, a Blacksmith in Chester for 1859 to 1861.
I don't know for sure, but from the census details they must have been in Chester at this time.
Thank you, John

Hello John well i didn't get much copying done,I looked in lots of postal directories, but it seems only certain years cover Chester. The 1861 P.D wasn't there. I went up in years then down found nothing at all couldn't even find Agnes.I did find the History Gazette of Cheshire with Chester for 1861.Only 3 Millers ,no Johns. Also looked in the 1850,nothing at all in That. I found the postal directory 1861 on the net which does cover Chester.Lots of blacksmiths/farriers pages of Pubs in and around wheelock no Johns. I have even had a quick look to see if i can find any births(scotland) to give me some clues, as you arnt sure if the name John is correct or how old he was soCant find any. There are lots of millers born Scotland but it could be any one of them. I suspect that the Nephew Alexander Jaffray is probably Jeffrey or Jeffrie. Do you have The Maybe John on the 1871 census. Sorry i couldnt be of more help.If you find any more clues let me know. They didnt emigrate did they

Hello Celia,
Many, many thanks for doing that for me, I really appreciate it.
I'm afraid I don't have John? for sure on any census. In 1871 the two girls Ellen and Agnes are in the Tynemouth Workhouse and brother John is married in Wallsend. By 1881 young Agnes has died and Ellen is living with brother John in Wallsend.
Ellen's marriage gives her father as John, a Joiner. And John's marriage gives his father as John, a Professor of Chemistry! Someone is telling porkies
In 1861 there's a John MILLER born Scotland 1821, a Married Boarder in Walker, Northumberland, a Labourer in a Chemical Factory. Maybe this is where the Professor of Chemistry story came from! Ellen later says she was born in Walker.
Ellen was my Great Grandmother and raised my Dad when his mother died 2 days after his birth. Dad still maintains she was Welsh. She's causing me a lot of problems!
Thank you again for all your help.
Regards, John

John it is possible Ellen could have been born in Wales, after all it is right next door.Maybe she was thought she was born in chester.Beacause she was brought up there, but it's on the census . It looks like John was a bit of wise guy . Hope you get things sorted. Don't worry your head about it ,it will all come together one day.Good Luck

Thank you Celia, I'm sure it will sort itself out. I'm looking forward to seeing the Scottish 1851 census. That should answer some questions, hopefully.
I must PM you about GREATOREX in Staffordshire.
Regards, John
