1841 Census lookup - James EGERTON
« on: Thursday 05 January 06 11:16 GMT (UK) »

Hi All,
I was wondering if someone could please check the 1841 census for James Egerton.

He appears in the 1851 cenus in Reading St Mary, Berkshire married to Mary Ann.
The reference for 1851 is HO107/1692/167/16 and the address is 11 Lower Hosier St, Reading.  James is from Oxfordshire & Mary Ann from Reading.

I am wanting in particular, to know if Mary Ann is James' 2nd wife.  I have a previous post which contains more info here:

Thanks in advance for all your help.
God bless you.

Hi Lyn
Is this them?
HO107/36/8 folio:9  page:12,  Hosier street, st. mary Reading

James Egerton  45  gardener?   no
Mary                  40                    Y
Jane                  20                    Y
Ann                   15                    Y
Jane                  11                    Y

Not sure about the second Jane, on closer inspection it looks like it could have been written over something else but the age was definitley in the female column so maybe one of them is a cousin?
Regards

Hi Barbarai,
Thank you for looking that up for me.  It is a shame that the wife is not Margaret, but I think that it may still be worth me having the PR in the area checked. I have been unable to get any further with this line..... Best get saving my pennies!!!

God bless you.

You don't explain where Margaret comes into this - but Mary Ann (Mary in 1841) is probably his first wife - they married in 1819.

Hi Newburychap,
Thanks for your imput.
My GGGrandfather was Isaac Eggerton/Egerton/Eggenton. He came to NZ in 1843 at the age of 17.  On all certs, etc his parents names are given as James & Marguerite (or Margaret) Eggerton and his birth place just as England.
I have been unable to find anything about his parents or family and can find no Margaret/James combinations on census, etc.  I had hoped that Margaret may have been the first wife & Mary Ann the second.
I suspect that Isaac may have come from somewhere relatively close to London.
Thanks again for yoyur interest.
God bless.
