I can't find a William or Mary on the 1851 census in Banwell or Locking. From the NBI which has coverage of Locking and Banwell this burial could be a possibility for William. Bearing in mind ages on the 1841 census are rounded to the nearest 5 (or certainly rounded) does this William's age look a possibility for the 1841 census? Besides William, Mary and Charles was there anyone else in the household?
30th November 1844 William CAVIL 48 Somerset Locking, St Augustine

Hi Valda
on the 1841 Census it gives birth as 1795 for william and 1796 for Mary so the death does fit and that would be why he is not in the 1851 ?
others is the household in 1841 are Charlotte b 1823 and Mary 1825
were did you find the burial
regards
Russell

Hi Theli
Thank you for your kind offer, if you could have a look for a grave/s at the church that would be great, and if you could also have a look at the records there if they are still there, I have a William Cavill born 1795 no date and a death/Burial 30 nov 1844 he was married to a Mary they had 3 children that i know of Charles 1835 , Charlotte 1823 and Mary 1825. Thank you very Much

It is extrememly rare for Anglican church records not to now have been deposited at county record offices. According to my Phillimore Atlas both Banwell and Locking church records have been deposited at Somerset Record Office
http://www.somerset.gov.uk/archives/
The website gives a full list of all the record office parish holdings plus dates.
There are indexes for Locking parish registers online and baptisms and burials for Banwell 1813-1837
http://home.freeuk.com/wsmfhs/bbindex.htm
These are only indexes though not full references. You can purchase the parish transcript from Weston Supermare FHS. Somerset Family History Society will also have indexes such as a countywide marriage index.

Thank you Valda
For all this infomation, by looking at the indexes for Locking parish registers online and baptisms and burials for Banwell i have been able to find a few cavill's listed, and there is a charles cavill in the lockin baptisms for 1813-1837 which would be the right dates. I could not see a marraige for either Charles to Hannah nor his father William to Mary in the locking marriges, but it looks good for a birth for william in locking, prehaps william and mary married in Banwell, which there are no indexs on the site. and Charles and hannah possible Yate were hannah was born? thank you once again for the links, a great help
regards

Hi Valda and haywood
Just to let you know that i think i found the marriage of Charles and hannah i came across this site
http://bathbmd.org.uk/
and was looking for another family, and while i was there typed in for charles and hannah. i found him with the spelling cavil and not cavill
Bath Marriage indexes for the years: 1860 Surname Forename(s) Surname Forename(s) Church / Register Office Registers At Reference CAVIL Charles BROWN Hannah Bath Register Office Bath RO1/19/056
this seems to fit really good as haywood said there was a connection to the brown family
'There seems to be a link with hannah and the Browns - 1851 has Eliza, daughter Fanny and son George in the workhouse in Yate'
and on thi9s marriage hannahs name is brown..
so am really pleased
thank you for all your help to everyone
Kind regards
Russell

Hi Russell, I have just returned from St Augustines churchyard in Locking. It is quite a small area and well kept. Unfrotunately I was unable to find the grave. There were several older looking ones which were totally illegible. I couldn't even make out a single letter on some of them so I assume that one of them was the one related to you. Sorry! Best wishes from Thelma

The majority of our ancestors could not afford gravestones or certainly ones that lasted beyond the equivalent time it took for a simple wooden cross to decay. It is an ununsual church that needed to keep records of the grave plots in the churchyard before the C20th, late C19th. Sextons and the families themselves would know where everyone was. Unless plots were occupied with families who could afford gravestones the usual procedure over the centuries was one of gradual recycling. The only evidence of burial in a churchyard for most of our ancestors is the burial register (which is in Somerset Record Office). Grave numbers and plots are really for cemeteries in the second half of the C19th where you actually purchased the right to bury in the land and for modern day churchyards where burials are still taking place and land is scarce.

Valda
