When to start a new lookup request?
« on: Thursday 05 January 06 23:18 GMT (UK) »

I'm a bit confused about cross postings and the protocols here for new threads. Huh

If I want to request a lookup for a particular person and that person has already been mentioned in posts concerning the whole family, do I just continue on the same thread with the new question or put up a completely new one?  Undecided

And, if it is a new one, do I cross-reference to the old one where the person is already mentioned, or put in all the known details again?

Thanks for your help.  Smiley

Hi Jojosam

No set answer to this one really.

Maybe start a new thread when replies to the old one have stopped.

A new thread gets more attention than one that has apparently been answered, but multiple posts for the same info do not go down well (You knew that already!)

YES!!  Please always refer back to former posts - it saves duplication of effort and it makes it much clearer which "John SMITH" you are researching.  Cutting & pasting the URL is quicker for you & means nothing gets missed, but make sure you add anything you have discovered more recently: maybe you ordered a cert as a result of your first post & the info in that has a bearing on your new post.

Oh and it is sometimes a good idea to start a new thread if the old one is getting unweildy, but post on the old one as we like to follow the story!  Grin

Hope this helps

kind regards, Arranroots  Wink

Hi Jojosam,

as Arranroots say, cross-reference to the old thread !

The ideal situation is to say on the old topic
I've posted a new request about xyz under
Name of new Topic
--URL of new topic--

and on the new topic start off with
This is a continuation from
Name of old Topic
--URL of old topic--

A bit more work for you, but people will thank you for it
