Did anyone see the second part of the BBC programme re-rowing the route of Jerome K. Jerome's "Three Men in a Boat" this evening, when near the end of their trip from Kingston to Oxford on the Thames, they stopped off by Abingdon church to admire the amazing family tree there to William LEE. He had 17 children, I forget how many resultant grandchildren, but I do remember that it was 197 great-grandchildren. Wondering what it was in the water in 17thC Oxfordshire then, and also whether Rootschatters know of anyone descended from this man. Wouldn't it be amazing if you were researching the LEE family in this part of the world and just stumbled across this tree without realising it existed... Keith (Square-eyed, tonight - but envious...)
But I'm not sure I'd want to find such a massive family tree all done for me - no thrill from finding that extra child, no excitement after discovering the maiden name of that wife, no looking for that marriage again and again and again, no searching under yet another variation of the name just in case - suddenly the idea's a lot more appealing!
I think the Lee family got so big because the children followed William's example. I've got one relative who had five children with his first wife, married a young second wife and had another fifteen but the children were far more modest in their productions, including about five who never married at all - put off the whole idea by the number of their siblings?
DALBY - Suffolk and, after 1860, Birmingham. EBENEZER - Cardiganshire & Glamorgan. GARVEY and GRAHAM - Mayo. HUBBARD - Birmingham. MAUND and LEWIS - Shropshire and Birmingham. MORGAN(S) - Cardiganshire. SLADE - Somerset and Worcester.
Thanks for that wish I'd watched the programme, I'm researching the 'Lee' family in Oxfordshire, my G.G grandfather was a William Lee (not that one I'm sure) but will make a note of the Church name for if I get the chance to visit it sometime.
