Hi Think I may possibly be able to help Was this Robert Oadley who married Harriet Whiting? I have info about a Charles West (whose mother was a Mrs H. Oadley) They were travellers - had fairground rides/stalls. I believe Robert was Charles's brother. Charles died in 1931 in Chesterfield

Hi Patricia Well you may well know more than me I'm afraid! We own a Robey Showmans Steam Engine and when we purchased it it came with a folder of letters from a gentleman (Mr John Bullock) who used to work on the engine - his boss was Charles West (who he held in very high regard). Ever since then I've been trying to piece together the history of the Engine and of Charles West. It's been very difficult not least because they seem to have an allergy to census's and birth records! Do you know who Harriet Whiting's father was? I'll have to go through the letters again because there may be references to places that may be of help to you but in the meanwhile:- Charles West/Oadley - one of 3 boys and 5 girls, son of Mrs H Oadley (previously married to a Mr West) of Alfreton. Charles's Wife - No idea of name! - remarried a Mr Culleo an ice cream vendor of Sheffield. They were based in Whitwell, Worksop, Notts They had 3 boys and 2 girls (no names) His brother in law was a Mr James Whiting Easter Monday 1931 they were at a fair at Hardwick Hall before 12 noon on the Tuesday Charles West fell off the tow bar and under the Engine as they were pulling out. He was taken to Chesterfield Royal Infirmary and died 4 days later. I imagine there will be newspaper reports but I haven't had chance to go look for them yet.

hi kay i will try and explain the best i can. first of all this is a freind of mines family, she is kath sneesby, she also told me about a steam engine , her mother was bella idona oadley born1921 traveller. her father was charles william oadley born 1889 derbyshire he married hilda kitts, born 1894 his father was robert oadley ,born 1866 he married harriet whiting, her father was samuel whiting, also a traveller. i have robert james west marriage certificate, he was the father of robert oadley born 1866, robert james west married emma skitchley ,also a traveller. robert james west lived with a lady befor he married emma, and that is when he had robert and i think another two boys ,there could have been more children, thats the part i am trying to find out about, now robert james west murded his wife emma in 1889. at handsworth sheffield. he was hanged at wakefield jail, kath also said that hilda kitts who married charles ,later married culleo an ice cream vendor. so we are talking about the same family. there is a book called the sheffield murders, and it tells all about the murder, i have the news paper reports from the archives, but they are very blurred, but it tells you more in the book. hope you can understand all this, if you want to know anything more , just ask, patricia,

Hi again Patricia! WOW!!! I would be very grateful for any information your friend has about her family - does she have any photos? Meanwhile I need to photocopy these letters and send them to her/you. I imagine your friend knows that they were a fairground/showmen family - have either of you been in touch with Worlds Fair? The murder is also mentioned here:- http://users.nwon.com/pauline/Clippings.html I think the letters will make for an interesting read for your friend although how much she will learn from them will depend on how much she already knows. Mr Bullock does mention in one that he was given a photograph of "Kitchener" by the late Mrs H Oadley's granddaughter from Clay Cross in Derbyshire I wonder if that was Bella? Just a quick quote from one of Mr Bullocks letter "I still hear Mr Wests happy laughter and chatter - he was my Best Boss and Friend. I miss him very much and if I could turn back the clock I would indeed be very happy"
I don't know if I'd be allowed to post my email address or postal address here. I know some sites don't allow it and I haven't checked this one yet (I was more interested in getting in touch with you!) will check that out now and if it's allowed I'll post my details
Many thanks for all your help so far Kay

hi kay, when i first asked kath if i could do her family tree, she didnt know much about them, apart from that they were fair ground people.and travelled around a lot, she wasnt even sure if her mothers maiden name was west or oadley , but luckely she found her mothers birth certificate. and she did know about the ice cream vendore, she also said that there was once a model of the steam engine, that some one in the family made, but she didnt know what happend to it, she never knew about the murder, i will ask her if she has any photoes, or if she can remember anything , i will go and ring her now, and see if she is in, it would be great to know what is in the letters, i will get back to you soon patricia,

Firstly - thanks Arranroots!
Patricia - just in case you didn't already know this is (as far as I can tell) Harriet Whiting's father Samuel Whiting http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~brett/photos/swhiting.html
I also have a reference to a Harriet Oadley born or christened 9/12/1891 in Ripley Derby. Parents - Robert and Harriet

I have just found this topic whilst I was also carrying out some research on the Oadley/West families and finding all the difficulties you seem to have had. I am the editor of the Platform magazine, the quarterly journal of the Fairground Society. I was preparing an article to accompany some images I have f both Kitchener, Harriet Oadley's Fowler engine, that later became the Iron Maiden, and the Wallis Pride of Merthyr. If anyone is interested in seeing copies please send me a message with e-mail address and I will send them.
As well as Robert Oadley/West who married Samuel Whiting's daughter in 1889, there was also James Oadley/West who died in Nottingham infirmary on 6th July 1929 aged 56, and was buried at Normanton cemetery with his wife, who died 14th August 1912.
James also travelled amusements around the Notts/Derby area.
I have also read that Robert Oadley was born in Kidlington, Oxon, even though he says Bristol on the 1891 census. Perhaps this was a deliberate error to distance himself from the connections with his father?
I have got some more information and will post more when I can put it together in a more readable form.

Hi Platform
Welcome to Rootschat!
In addition to this thread, you might find our Travelling People board interesting.
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/board,387.0.html
You might even be able to help some of our Rootschatters? I think I am right in saying that you can post images on that board (although not on the Look-up boards).
kind regards, Arranroots
