My Great-Great-Grandfather Thomas John Hill
|
Dear Alan, My Great Grandmother was named Margaret Mabel Munson, but went by the name of Mabel as was born 1897 in Newbridge, Ireland. In about 1911, her father William John Munson, b. about 1870 in either Kamptee, India or Ireland, a Sergeant in the 10th Hussars (44th Essex Regiment) moved his family, including Mabel, to Exeter (where I live!!). William's wife was named Mary Ellen O'Callaghan b. 1877 in County Cork, Ireland. My Great Grandmother was William and Mary Ellen's eldest child. The married couple also had Florence Ellen (b. 1898, died 1898 in Canterbury), Victoria Aileen (b. 1899 in Canterbury), Kathleen (b. 1901 in Hounslow), Nora Ellen (b. 1904 in M.H.O.W, India) and William A. Munson (b. 1909 in Muree, India). Does any of this sound familiar to you? I have more details regarding William and Mary Ellen's children and other decendents in Devon including one's self if you would like to see them: http://www.gencircles.com/users/ryry89/3/data/79

Dear Alan,
Are you the son of Brian Terence Munson?
We have gone back in the Munson family to 1586.
Most of them were living in Great Horkesley, Essex
Please contact me.

I've only just discovered this site so hope this gets to the writers of the previous messages - Alan, Ryan and Toni - because I'm not sure where Barserga fits in....
My grandmother was Letty Munson, born 1899 in East Ham. She was daughter of Luke Munson (son of Wm Munson who, according to the 1881 census was born in "Orsley" - Great Horkesley?) & Letty Baserga.
One of my nan's brothers (George I think) went to live in Dunster in Somerset at the beginning of WW2, and some of his family are still there, but it was a big family and some moved away - so maybe there is an Exeter connection from that root? I've got a bit more detail if it's of any help (though if the Brian Munson that Toni mentioned is who I think he is then that's the source of infomation, not me!)
However, it's the Baserga link that I'd like to know more about! I think that the Letty Barserga who was my great-grandmother (who died in Weymouth in 1968 - I met her a few times though I don't remember her well) was daughter of George Baserga (b1853) and Letithia Agnes Baserga (nee Turner b 1854) who lived in East Ham by the time of the 1901 census, but both born in the Clerkenwell/Holborn area.
I think that have not yet proved that George Baserga was second son of Louis Baserga (b 1818 in Holborn) and grandson of another Louis Baserga (b 1794 in Italy) Interestingly George's older brother is also Louis, and he and his father and grandfather were picture framers, though George (in 1901) was a tailor's cutter. And he named on of his sons Louis, though he wasn't a picture framer either.
So the things I'm trying to find out are: - am I right that George was grandson of Louis from Italy? And where in Italy did Louis come from? - the 1851 census says "Camois" but I can't find a trace of the placename. And where in the UK are the Basergas now? - there were a lot of children in the 1901 census with the surname, but most of them girls. Has the name died out?
Sorry for such a long note! - look forward to some interesting answers!
Barbara
