Hi,
I am trying to find my relatives in march. I believe that John Remington was born around 1814 and lived around Binnimoor during the 1871 census. His wife was Ellen and had a son named John (1869) who immigrated to America.
I have hit a dead end going past the 71 census. Possible that that was his second marrage. I think that I found him married to Mary Richardson, but I cannot cross reference. Any help would be fantastic!!!!!!

Hi, and welcome to Rootschat

The baptism index on the Cambs FHS website at http://www.cfhs.org.uk/Search.html has a John Remmington age 11 baptised in March in 1828, son of John & Sarah, which is the closest.

The same site has census indexes 1841-61 as well. I'll check out the full censuses to see what I can find

OK, school run over. So in 1871, which you have, living  in Whittle End March are John Remington 57 pauper b March, Ellen wife 37 b March, John 10 (where did you get 1869 from, or is it a typo for 1859?), William 8, James 6, all b March

In 1861 RG9/1044 folio 113
Binnimoor, March
John Remington head marr 43 farmer of 20 acres
Ellen Remington wife 28 b March
John Remington son 2 b March
John Kemp son in law (=stepson) 8 b March

So there's a disparity in his age between 1861 and 1871, but 1861 fits with the baptism in 1828

FreeBMD at http://freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl shows a marriage in the Dec quarter 1855 in North Witchford registration district which includes March, between John Remington and Ellen Kemp. If you purchase the certificate from http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ you'll get fathers' names

So John Kemp in 1861 was Ellen's son either by a first husband or he was illegitimate

1851 HO107/1765 folio 697
Binnemoor, March
John Remington head marr 34 ag lab b March
Mary Remington wife 30 b March

I can't find the death of Mary 1851-55

FreeBMD has a marriage of John Remington in North Witchford in Dec 1844 where the other party might be Mary Ann Hopper or Mary Parr. You would need to purchase the certificate to find out which it was.

In 1841 there's a John Remington 20 Male servant born Cambs living in March, which might be him. Ages over 15 in 1841 were rounded down to the nearest 5 below so 20 covered a range 20-24.

I suspect that you have seen all the above given your reference to Binnimoor and Mary Richardson who was a servant in the same household as John in 1841, but who didn't become his wife.

As John was a widower in 1881, it appears as though Ellen died in the March quarter 1874 age 42.

What puzzles me though is the death that I've just spotted, of John Remington aged 14 in Sept 1873 in North Witchford, who looks suspiciously like the John aged 2 in 1861 whose birth was registered in June 1859. There are no other baptisms of a John Remington at around that time in North Witchford.

How have you linked John who emigrated to the USA to the March family?  A red flag is waving vigorously for me! What else do you know about the US John - I can't find him in US censuses (although I can't access the full entries)? I can do some more digging for John and Sarah, probable parents of the John of your enquiry, but am loth to do so pending confirmation that we're looking at the right parents for US John.

Thank you David!!!!
That is the same info I have but it is great that you were able to verify as well. John Remington (1859 yes that was a typo!!) is my husband's great grandfather. The rough info that I have from his father states that John and Ellen were John parents and John immigrated to the US around 1880 and married a woman named Emma in Pennsylvania. I have hit the wall past that. I am going to order the marriage certificate as you suggested to obtain the parents names. I don't about the info on the death is surfacing. I have been able to locate detailed info on John and Emma in the states and all of the location info seems to gel. Any further info that you can pass forward would be GREAT!!!!!
Thanks for current and future info!

As I said, I don't have access to US censuses, but by a process of elimination in 1900 there's a John Remmington born 1871 in England, immigrated 1881, with a wife Emma, living in Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, with children Cora and Porter.

In 1910 I can get a bit more information- John b 1870 England, Emma b 1875 PA, Cora 1895, Porter 1899, Ellen 1901, Harry 1903; John 1905, Myrtle 1907, George 1909. Still in Fayette Co.

Is this your husband's family? If it is then I think you're barking up the wrong tree in March. I wouldn't order that marriage cert until you can pinpoint the family in a US census, as I fear it could be £7 wasted. If it's the wrong family can you let us know which census they can be found in, as I can't find a John Rem(m)ington born 1859 +/-5 in England

David

Later - there was another John H and Ellen Remmington in the 1871 England census, but without a son John. He was 28, she 24, in the Royal Marines. I can't see them in subsequent censuses
Later still. I've finally found them in 1881, where he's enumerated as Henry Rimington. But no son John so I think this family can be ruled out

I've since found out that the 1844 marriage was to Mary Parr. There was a 20 year old Mary Parr living in March in 1841, in the household of Edward Parr, 50. The Baptism Index on shows a Mary Parr, aged 22 baptised in 1836 in March, daughter of Edward and Mary A. Nothing with this family seems to tie up!

Hi there Desert Girl - I have been delving into my mother's family.  My maternal Great grandfather Edward Henry Reed born Plymouth in 1864 married Elizabeth Mills Towch from March. James Towch was on their marriage certificate as Elizabeth's father, a Farmer from March.  On the 1901 census they had Robert Whittlesey staying with them in Mile End, London.

Elizabeth's brother James also lived with them a bit earlier with his bride Phoebe Atkins. I have a list of their Children.  All certificates clearly have Towch, but I guess Touch has also crept in from mis-spelling.

Edward and Elizabeth had a string of children, one of whom, Edward Henry is father to my mother, Winifred Elizabeth Reed born 1912 and still alive now at 96.

Have lots more bits and pieces if you are interested.  Would love to know your direct connections.

Cheers Janet

Hi NorfolkGal,

I have just read your list of names and I too have a link to a Mary HARDY, she married an Arthur Booth and they had a Daughter Sarah Ann Booth who was my Grandmother.  I know that Mary died when Sarah was young (maybe 10) and that Sarah went to live with Arthur's parents in March in Cambridge or North Witchford as it was then known.  I can't find any further trace of Mary, I can't find any record of the death.  I was hoping that maybe you have a link through your side to my Mary.

Hi Norfolk Gal,

I know this is a reply to a post of yours from almost a year ago, but it said you were researching the surname of Randall. My mother was Doris Elizabeth Gowler and in 1940 she married a Stanley Edmund Randall. They both lived in March, and the marriage was registered in North Witchford. Both are now dead, but I think there was a child, possibly a daughter, born between 1940 and 1949 who emigrated to Canada. Any relation to you?

Best,

Liz R.
