Or any Dunoon burial details for either Daniel or Betsey DYSON, who were living 2 miles south of Dunoon in the 1881 Census, both aged 65 then...?

There seems to be 3 current cemeteries

http://www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/pdffilesstore/cemeterylocations

it's a pdf file from Argyle and Bute council.

Inverchaolin, Toward, Dunoon area
Hamilton Street, Dunoon
High Kirk, Dunoon

Plus the Kilmun ones.

These are the contact numbers.
http://www.argyll-bute.gov.uk/pdffilesstore/areaoffices

They may be able to help with when the cemetries where opened.

The Scottish Genealogy Society have some transcribed MI for sale but maybe someone here might have the books?

Cheers,

Can I express my ignorance of this area of the world, Boongie Pam, and ask what subdivision of the County of Argyllshire is Cowal exactly.  And I think I have heard of an event called the "Cowal Games", but maybe I dreamt it...
The cemeteries I am getting interested in are obviously located in the Cowal area.

Express away  Grin

I'll join you.  Embarrassed

Unfortunately I don't know the area at all, I'm just a Google fanatic.

Sorry - does anyone else know?

Having today used the Scottish pay-per-view site, the details I have are now: Betsey Dyson, died 1886, aged 70; Daniel Dyson, died 1904, aged 88.
They lived at Buthkollidar, just south of Dunoon, so if anyone comes across their M.I's on a gravestone/gravestones in a cemetery in this area, I would very much like to hear about it...!

The Cowal Peninsula, a land of rich Highland diversity, home to charming hamlets and villages like Tighnabruaich, and Lochgoilhead, mighty mountain peaks and deep glacial lochs.

Dunoon is the main (and only) town on the peninsula  more information is available from http://www.visitscottishheartlands.com/areas/bute/index.cfm

The Cowal Games refer to the Highland Games/Gathering held in Dunoon each year.

I've just heard today that in the last few months Broadband internet has come to the Dunoon area for the first time, so perhaps there'll be a bit more action on here from now on...

Hi, Everyone,
This thread has had an extremely happy ending in that my friends in Dunoon finally made contact with a very helpful gentleman based at the Castle House Museum, Castle Gardens, Dunoon.
He identified where the grave of Daniel Dyson was in the Holy Trinity Church Graveyard.  Not only that, but there is a huge amount of family detail on the tombstone:  Daniel Dyson's date of death and age; his wife's maiden name, her exact place of death and date; details of Daniel's son's date of death, his age, and where he was buried (Birmingham); his daughter's date of death, age at death, place of burial (Glasgow), and the name of the man she married.
There just seems to be so much more info. in Scottish records - Daniel's death certificate had much more than you'd find on an English or Welsh one.
Wonderful, well worth the wait...

Chrissy,
It's really been very difficult - I've been lucky in that I just happen to have friends living in Dunoon, and one of them went to see the local expert on family history there at the Museum.  They have the 1851 and 1861 Censuses, but you say that your family are not there after 1841.
I could PM you this gentleman's e-mail address if you like...
