Free RootsChat server down for security maintenance

The free RootsChat webserver has been taken offline for security maintenance.

As some of you may know, the excellent program phpGedView (from www.phpgedview.net ) was compromised (or cracked) at around Christmas day on a great number of servers. As a number of our users have uploaded that program to their free RootsChat websites, we have had to take action to protect them. The newest download version has however had this secuity hole filled in.

We applied some protective measures to counter the compromises, but for the safety of everybody's websites that have free hosting with RootsChat, we have  made a decision to temporarily suspend public access until we are satisfied with security.

Everybody that has existing sites with RootsChat can be assured that their data is safe, and is also safely backed up too.

We may well be a couple of days dealing with this, so we're really sorry about your website temporally not being available at this time.

The free webspace server has been brought back online again now.
