I am seeking details of the parentage and family of Elizabeth McGill/MaGill, my GGMother. She was born in Cavan c1806. She married Thomas Gillett (not sure of date) and had children as follows: Sarah Jane, b.5/10/1834, Clonmel. James, b.26/5/1836, Newbridge Thomas, b.17/5/1840, Newry. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Alan (Australia)

Hello Alan,
What denomination was Elizabeth McGill/MaGill? Was she a member of the Catholic faith, the Established Church (Anglicans or Church of Ireland), a Methodist or possibly a Presbyterian?
You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Thankyou Christopher for your surprise response to my query. Thomas Gillett was a Private in the 30th Regiment of Foot serving in Ireland at the time he married Elizabeth. I suspect it was a marriage recorded in military terms, but I have not as yet been able to find the record. As you will note from the birth places of their children they moved around quite a bit in Ireland, and then went to live in Henley-on-Thames in England after Thomas's discharge. Whilst in Henley they had further children. I am pretty certain that Thomas was a non-catholic, so assume Elizabeth also was not catholic. Not sure if this will help, but if there is any way to trace Elizabeth I would be absolutely ecstatic. Thankyou again, Alan

Hello Alan,
It looks as though Magill / McGill wasn't a common name in Co. Cavan.

Hi Christopher, Thanks again for your response. Some time ago I picked-up a site that showed the County Cavan 1821 Census for Crosserlough. It had been submitted by Deborah Annandale, but when I tried to contact her I was informed the site was invalid. This is some of the info I obtained: Townland of Killynure. Parish of Crosserlough. Barony of Castlerahan, County of Cavan
House number 18. John Magill - age 48 - Farmer Alice Magill, wife - age 38. Their 9 children included L????y Magill, daughter, age 14, Spinner. There was a comment suggesting the name could be Loucy, but I wondered if there was a possibility also that it could be Lizzy, short for Elizabeth. Houses numbered 19 and 21 also had Magill residents. Elizabeth's first born was Sarah Jane Gillett born 15/10/1834 in Clonmel, so the age was a reasonable fit. Comments please. Alan

Hello Alan,
Lizzy looks a better possibility than Loucy to me.
Lucy is a common name but I've not seen Loucy before.
