Search RootsChat
« on: Wednesday 11 January 06 19:44 UTC (UK) »

this has almostly certainly been mentioned before...how to search a name without getting everything that the name is contained in.....e.g.I want to search the name Orr and am getting every post with morrison, sorry, norris, florrence etc ...am I doing it wrong?

No, sorry, that's the way it is I'm afraid. We used to have it where it would search the exact name typed in only, but it ground everything to a halt.

The best way is to click on  "Advanced Options" and only include the boards where you think that name crops up.

Just discovered this as a possibility:

enter your search term in an external search engine,
with site:www.rootschat.com as part of the search string.
The search engine will then only search RootsChat.

e.g.
orr in Search RootsChat search brings up hundreds results, as you are
Quote from: jng1414
getting everything that the name is contained in.....e.g.I want to search the name Orr and am getting every post with morrison, sorry, norris, florrence etc ...am I doing it wrong?

but
orr site:www.rootschat.com just brings up results from RootsChat with the name ORR

This also means that you can use the usual search engine rules
example: Google:
Tips for using Google in Genealogy Searches
http://www.searchforancestors.com/archives/google.html

and it is much, much faster than the internal search  Grin Grin

and it probably means less demands on the RootsChat server, as it will search it's cached pages.
Although this might also mean that the newest entries aren't included ??

Try it and see and give us some feedback  Smiley

I daresay the original problem no longer applies (given that it was posted in January last year), but there is a simple way to avoid Morrison, Florrence, etc, coming up if you want Orr - simply key in a space before and after Orr  Smiley

I would imagine that applies to any search engine around. It's not foolproof, of course, in that it would omit a reference to Orr that was immediately followed by an apostrophe, a comma or a full stop, but it would certainly get rid of the unwanted returns.

Hi Gareth,

Any but the one from RootsChat, it seems.

It will work on most search engines, which usually use a "complete words only" type search, but unfortunately, not on RootsChat, which is most definitely "complete word or within a word"

I just tried it, spaces an' all, and got 598 pages of Orr, Norris, Morrison, etc, etc.

This has been a major problem from the beginning, but maybe my tip with the external search engines will help.

Well, well, you live and learn.

I must just have been lucky that none of the names I've searched for on Rootschat (e.g. Dowdeswell, Jones) are the sort that turn up as parts of other words  Cheesy

ps.  to come back to this site for a moment .......
http://www.searchforancestors.com/archives/google.html

Avoid any input boxes you see on this page, or on the two linked pages:
Easy Google Genealogy Searcher, and
Step by Step Google Genealogy

just read the tips and and use them in your normal Google searches.

Some of them (but not all) will also work in other search engines,
so it's worth just trying it out to see ...
