Setting parameters to filter out irrelevant stuff
« on: Tuesday 09 September 08 09:28 UTC (UK) »

Is there a means of entering search terms to filter out results with no relevance to one's needs?
For example, two of the names I research are 'Town' and 'Snow'..............putting these names in on their own brings up a load of postings with no relevance..especially with regard to Town as you can imagine!
I've tried putting brackets or " ....." or <......>  round them   but still get the same results.
Any ideas please?

I sympathise, essexdavid.  My ancestors are called Church.  You can imagine what that brings up in the search -  every church ever mentioned, plus compounds like Hornchurch, churchyard. etc.  Roll Eyes As you say, even if I enter "Annie Church", I still get the same response.

Some kind of a filter would be very helpful.

Hi both  Smiley

The best way of doing it that I know of is to actually do a google search for this site, like this:

site:rootschat.com "william snow"

Yes Tati............a very useful tip. It helped me to find several "Mary Ann Snow's" but none were mine!

But well worth trying..............maybe it should be in the FAQ section?  Smiley

Hi

Tati’s suggestion is (naturally) brilliant Cool if you wish to restrict the hits to this site.

To get some more relevant hits from other sites you could try entering something like .... genealogy +"William Snow"
