Can anyone tell me anything about this place, on Church St.? I see what I think might be it on the old map of Maidstone, but there are no street names. It looks like it might be called Cutbush? Did it take up the whole block, or just number 2 Church St. (which is what the census says). It appears that most of the family providers on the street were "almsmen/women". Are there any records anywhere? How did one qualify to live there?

I'm sure there are almshouses still in Church Street, a terrace of about 6/8. No idea who set them up or who could live there. Perhaps the Centre for Kentish Studies could help.

Did a google - From Maidstone: Descriptive Gazetteer entries
Sir John Banks' alms houses are for six poor persons, and have £60 ayear from endowment; Brenchley's are for old persons, and have £50; Duke's are for females, and have £191; Hunter's are for twelve poor persons, and have £184; Corral's are for six persons, in six houses; and Cutbush's are for decayed tradesmen or journeymen mechanics, were built and endowed in 1865 at a cost of nearly £12,000, and give £52 a year to the holder of each of six houses

This is most interesting. My googling was not nearly so successful.
Thank you all very much; I really appreciate it.
I don't really know anything about almshouses, as we don't have them in Canada. I understand they were charitable housing for the poor who could no longer work. Do you still have the same sort of arrangement over there, then?
So, do I understand correctly that there are still almshouses on Church St., and that they are now called Cutbush and Corrall?
I shall look for that link to the Maidstone gazeteer.
What does "a terrace of about 6/8" mean? I don't think we have this terminology here.

Sorry for my English terminology.
Almshouses were usually set up by a wealthy local person to aid the poor. Today they would be administered by a charitable trust. Many towns and villages have old almshouses still lived in today.
A terrace of 6 houses would be 6 houses joined together side by side.

Ah, that makes perfect sense, then, and makes sense out of my data. Mine are living at #4 out of a group of 6, but the only one that specifies "almshouse" on the census is #2, despite the fact that there seem to be numerous "almsmen/women" in the other houses, so I was confused. Now I know! thanks.
