Chipping Norton advice
« on: Thursday 12 January 06 07:30 GMT (UK) »

My Grt grt grt Grandfather John Allcock/ Alcock was a painter / plumber and glazier in Chipping Norton ( 1830 Pigots ).

He died April 17th 1845 prob Chipping Norton.

Iam trying to establish how old he was at death, to help pinpoint when and where he was born.

Any help would be very much appreciated. I live in New Zealand and am unable to visit cemeteries etc.

Hi

Do you have his death certificate as that should give his age when he died. In case you haven't FreeBMD has this GRO reference:

John Allcock Death June Quarter 1845 Chipping Norton 16 40

No I'm afraid it won't tell you where he was born, but it will definately tell you how old he was so at least you will have an approximate birth date. It may also give you another member of his family, if one of them that was present at his death, but as you now have some census information I expect you know some of his families names now too.

The next logical step would be to search for his marriage which will tell you where he was living at the time of his marriage and possibly what his father's name was, which again narrows down the search for his birth. Of course, unfortunately presumably both these events occured before civil registration began so you are going to have to look for parish records rather than certificates.

I would try searching the IGI for his marriage using his name & his wife's first name and see if anything likely comes up in the Chipping Norton area, same for his birth. People often didn't move far from where they were born. If you don't find it that doesn't mean it didn't occur there, as the IGI records are far from complete and often inaccurate, so it will still be worth getting someone to do a look - up or paying the Oxford Record Office to check the baptism records for around that time. If you do find a marriage entry on the IGI which isn't from Chipping Norton try that place for a baptism. The other avenue to try is if the 1841 census gave you any children you can look for a baptism for one of them, which may give you the mother's maiden name, which will help pinpoint the marriage. It is always worth writing to the record office to get a copy of the actual register entry as you often get more information than you get on the IGI, e.g actual birth dates, mother's maiden names, father's names & occupation, witnesses at marriages who may be relatives.

Anyway the way to get the death certificate if you still want it is:
Firstly I would check the GRO reference, I got it from freeBMD, which means it has been transcribed and so inevitably there are some errors on the website. You may find that a local library or family research centre has copies of the GRO indexes that you can search for free. If not go to www.1837online.com on this site you purchase units, which you can then use to check scans of the original indexes or search the 1861 census. I think the smallest amount you can buy if £5 worth (sorry don't know how this translates to your money) which lasts 3 months.
When you have confirmed the reference go to www.gro.gov.uk and you can order the certificate online there. Cost £7
Sorry for long winded message - good luck

The death reference for John Allcock on FreeBMD matches the details on the official registration site(1837 online).

The OFHS's Oxfordshire Marriage Index (1538-1837) lists several John AL(L)COCKs.  One of possible interest is a widower from Chipping Norton marrying in 1816.

Does the 1841 census give a wife's name, so that I can cross-check?
