England -> Bermuda, West Indies. Experts advice needed, thanks.
« on: Thursday 12 January 06 13:58 GMT (UK) »

Hi everyone,

I'm fairly new to family history research so any help here would be greatly received. Smiley

My great grandmother was born in Bermuda in 1890 but her elder and younger sisters were born in Leicestershire. Is there any way I can find out about the family's trip to Bermuda? (Passenger lists or census information in Bermuda? anything at all?) I really don't know what resources are available. I see alot of info about passengers to America but not the West Indies.

The information that I've got is:

James Carroll (father)
Born: 1849 in Northern Ireland but living in Leicestershire at the time of their journey.

1888 - Agniss Carroll (daughter) born in Leicestershire.
1890 - Ann St. Sinclair Carroll (daughter) born in Bermuda, West Indies.
1891 - Eunice Carroll (daughter) born in Leicestershire.

So this would indicate that the family travelled from England to Bermuda between the years 1888 and 1890 and that they returned home to England between 1890 and 1891.

Will this be like looking for a needle on a haystack and I should forget researching this? or are there some resources out there for what I'm looking for?

Many thanks for reading, I appreciate it. Cheers!
McSorley.

EDIT: I have some more info now. Thanks for reading! Smiley

If you don't already have these, here are a couple of links that may give you somewhere to start

Thanks for your reply. Smiley

I have found out that James Carroll was in the army and stationed out in Bermuda so wouldn't have been on passenger lists.

Cheers for now. Smiley

In case you don't have it, you should be able to get Ann St. Sinclair Carroll's birth certificate -

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/research/searchingforoverseasrecords/index.asp#0 - probably in regimental registers, these are also indexed on 1837online but you can just ask the GRO to look for you without an index number.  That should give you James Carroll's regiment and then it is much easier to look for army records etc.

Thank you for your help. Smiley

I didn't know about 1837online or the GRO website. I will take a look on both websites and find out which gives the most information for the lowest amount of money. Thanks again.
