SMITHS of Gazeley
« on: Thursday 12 January 06 18:43 GMT (UK) »

I am seeking marriage and parentage data for William Smith, born about 1777, perhaps in Gazeley.

He married an Elizabeth - surname and place unknown - and his children were baptised from 1804 onwards in Burrough Green, Cambs, and from 1814 onwards at Westley Waterless. (Cambs FHS Baptism index and the IGI).

His children include Susan, Sarah, Ann, Eilzabeth and Rhoda in B/Green, and Elizabeth, Thomas, George, Rhoda and John in W/Waterless. (The first Elizabeth and Rhoda died in infancy).

In 1841 he was back in Burrough Green as head of the family, a widower living with sons John and George and his married daughter Elizabeth and her husband  Thomas Mingay. The return shows him as "born in county".

In 1851 he was still in Burrough Green, with the same sons and daughter, plus a few additional Mingay children. This return shows him as born in Gazeley, Suffolk.

I have checked 1841 and 1851 returns for Gazeley and there are plenty of Smiths there with similar family names. Susan and William in particular are favoured.

By 1861 he appears to have died. I cannot pinppoint hs death with any accuracy as it is such a common name.

If anyone can help with a possible birth/baptism in Gazeley about 1777 and the names of his parents, and/or a marriage to Elizabeth prior to 1804, I should be most grateful.

Hi wdurham

William s/o George and Mary Smith
baptised 16th August 1778 at Gazely

William Smith m. Elizabeth Gooday
20th November 1801 at Gazely
Both of this parish
Presence of William Farthing and ? Cook (could be Tamar?)

Whilst looking for the above marriage I also saw this:

George Smith (widower) m. Elizabeth (really sorry but could not read her surname, definitely began with an N - looked something like Naylor)
14th October 1795
Perhaps this is William's father marrying for a second time?

Kind regards
Anne
