The Cambridge Family History site has the 1851 census online.

www.cfhs.org.uk

It is an excellent site with a lot of information.

Hi Geoff,

here are two more sites of interest:

The Norfolk Transcription Archivs: http://www.genealogy.doun.org/transcriptions/index.php

(Wisbech was sometimes in Norfolk, sometimes Cambridge, and, I heard somewhere, sometimes in Lincoln !)
There are 389 entries for CROSS, some of them in Wisbech
e.g.
Wisbech District Tilney cum Islington
Baptism: 1817 CROSS, Sarah Robert + Charlotte (too young, maybe ?)

and  Wisbech and the Fenlands: http://contueor.com/wisbech/indexes/index.htm
23 CROSS entries, some from Wisbech !

Hope this helps,
Bob

Hi Geoff,

Are you sure you are looking for Sarah??? I have been going in circles to find the info on the 1841 census and getting nowhere none of the Sarah's fitted with the children.

Had a look on the Lds site and found this

Peter Cross chr 1831  in Ely son of Philip Cross and Sarah Freeman
plus there was an entry for Ephraim chr  1829 and another Ephraim chr in 1835 it was a members entry but I decided I would start there.

In 1841 I found this family

Philip Cross      40   Ag Lab
Ellen  Cross      35
Philip  Cross     15
John   Cross     14
Peter Cross      10
Ephraim Cross  7
George  Cross  3
Sarah    Cross  4
Mary  Cross      1

they were living Cuckold heath, Ely, Cambridgeshire.

Thought they might have got wifes name wrong so checked the 1851 index and this is how they now look

Philip  Cross     50
Ellen   Cross     46
Peter  Cross     20
Ephraim Cross  17
George Cross   12
Sarah  Cross    14
Mary Cross       10
Sampson Cross  8
Eli                       6

So did Sarah go by 2 names as the children match or maybe Ellen died and Sarah was a step mum. Let me know if you think this is your family
I hope it is. All the best Anjo

Hi Anjo,

Thank you for the look up, this is my CROSS family.
Sarah was known as Ellen, I am reasonably sure she must have been christened Sarah Ellen FREEMAN & just prefered to be known as Ellen. I have not yet located her origins yet, but suspect that she was also born in Ely.

Her son Ephraim's death certificate gives his mother's name as Ellen. This threw me off track for a while as I couldn't locate my Phillip marrying an Ellen anywhere.

Could I ask a favour of you for the birthplace of Ellen {Sarah} if it's shown on the census please.

Cheers

Hi Geoff,   The 1841 doesn't give birth places  and I only checked the index of the 1851 as I don't have the actual census. The film no of the 1851 is HO107/1764  folio 557B  if you could get someone to check it out for you your answer may lay there.

There are 237 names for Cross in Ely so I would presume that Philip is a local and you have inherited a large family !!

Have you checked out the Cambridgeshire fhs  site there is loads of info on there. they have the index to both 1841 and 1851 plus birth and burials between 1801 and 1837 and a whole load of other stuff

Happy hunting Anjo

There are 2 Sarah Freemans born Ely 1802 on the Cambs FHS Baptism Index. When she quoted age 46 in 1851 she may have been economical with the truth.
