Can anyone tell me please where Bishop Maton is situated in Shropshire, I cannot seem to find it on the map,

 Hello Pete,

Well as you will appreciate researching the EDWARDS  name can be a bit of a bind sometimes if as myself you come up against a brick wall like the one I am having at present. You ask what Edwards I am researching it is,
Thomas Edwards who mrd a Jane Roberts from Chester.
Thomas is showing on the 1851 census as being brn Salop, Shropshire, occ Miner and Beer Shop, on the 1861 Census he is shown as being brn Bishop Maton Shropshire Miner hence my enquiry re Bishop Maton as I have search all over for such a name to no avail.
Thomas's son John brn 1839 Derbyshire mrd a Fanny Elcock at Hampstead London who was brn in Chelmarsh Bridgnorth 1841, of all details I have.
I do not know if you are able tohelp me with my enquiry but I would appreciate any help that you may be able to give me.
regards John Edwards

Hi Pete Smiley

The 1851 census shows Thomas as being brn 1812 Salop Shopshire, Jane brn 1813 Chester, their children.
John Edwards brn 1839 Milford Derbyshire
Elizabeth Edwards brn 1842 Bletchley Surrey
Mary Ann Edwards brn 1847 Upholland Lancashire
Emma Edwards brn1850 .Upholland Lancashire

I am asuming that Thomas was a railway miner as John his son ended up by being a Railway Miner Tunnel Inspector., and on researching down it look as if they followed railways.
By the way what Edwards Line are you researching Huh I may be able to help as I am in touch with rellies around the country, what area do you live I am in South Wales.
regards John

Have you got a copy of the actual census images?  If so, could you post the sections showing the place of birth for us to have a look at please?  If you don't have the images could you post the full reference numbers?

Following on from s.g.d. - could the 1861 census entry be "Bishop Mote"?  We all know spelling was variable, especially when the place wasn't known by the enumerator.

The writing's also a bit of a scrawl but I don't think I could have made "Maton" out of it.
