Workhouses
« on: Thursday 29 January 04 23:04 GMT (UK) »

I have just visited a fascinating site:

Quote
www.workhouses.org.uk is dedicated to the workhouse — its buildings, inmates, staff and administrators, even its poets...

It has lots of census lists as well,  so if you have a missing ancestor it may be worth you looking here!

Kazza.

Hi there Kazza

Yes, I quite agree, there is lots and lots of information on that site concerning the conditions that our ancestors endured when they became destitute.

Another very good source is:

www.Institutions.org.uk

This site contains information on Asylums, Orphanages, Hospitals, Reformatories, Almshouses, Prisons, Industrial & Special Schools, Dispensaries.

Hello Kazza
My maternal grandfather was in the St Mary's Institution, Islington, during the first world war when it was used to intern aliens, in my grandfather's case a German citizen.
The site you mention is certainly fascinating.
Best Wishes

Hi,  Chris and Drusilla,

Glad you enjoyed the site,  and thankyou Chris for your suggestion Cool

I think it is sites like these that help us 'flesh' out our family history,  after all the collecting of dates and names could just turn into statistics without some understanding of the differences in the way our ancestors lived.

Drusilla,  I am reading a facinating book,  Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson,  it is fiction but explores how the US dealt with people of Japanese origin in WWII,  I have had my eyes opened Sad

Kazza.

the site above is the same as this one: http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/

Another workhouse site (or should I say THE other workhouse site) is the Workhouse link on the Rossbret Site: http://www.institutions.org.uk/workhouses/

Between them, these two sites cover almost all the workhouses in Great Britain.

Coverage depends on the contributors, so there are descriptions and  photos for most entries, sometimes even plans of the buildings, and some census returns (usually 1881, some 1891).

Another site with workhouse census returns is: http://www.census-online.com/links/  although these are mainly links to the above sites.

http://www.ripon.co.uk/museums/ has photos of a typical workhouse, part of the North Yorkshire Law and Order Museums.

Hi,

if you have any links in your favourites to specific pages on this workhouse site:
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/

then please check them.

The site has been re-vamped, using SHTML (Secure HTML) instead of plain HTML so your links will either need to be edited, or just deleted and renewed.

e.g. the Workhouse at Merthyr Tydfil can now be found at:
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/MerthyrTydfil/MerthyrTydfil.shtml

and NOT at
http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/MerthyrTydfil/MerthyrTydfil.html
This will bring the dreaded "404 Page not found" error
