I have just visited a fascinating site:
www.workhouses.org.uk is dedicated to the workhouse — its buildings, inmates, staff and administrators, even its poets...
It has lots of census lists as well, so if you have a missing ancestor it may be worth you looking here!

Yes, I quite agree, there is lots and lots of information on that site concerning the conditions that our ancestors endured when they became destitute.
Another very good source is:

This site contains information on Asylums, Orphanages, Hospitals, Reformatories, Almshouses, Prisons, Industrial & Special Schools, Dispensaries.

My maternal grandfather was in the St Mary's Institution, Islington, during the first world war when it was used to intern aliens, in my grandfather's case a German citizen.
The site you mention is certainly fascinating.

Glad you enjoyed the site, and thankyou Chris for your suggestion 
I think it is sites like these that help us 'flesh' out our family history, after all the collecting of dates and names could just turn into statistics without some understanding of the differences in the way our ancestors lived.
Drusilla, I am reading a facinating book, Snow Falling on Cedars by David Guterson, it is fiction but explores how the US dealt with people of Japanese origin in WWII, I have had my eyes opened

Another workhouse site (or should I say THE other workhouse site) is the Workhouse link on the Rossbret Site: http://www.institutions.org.uk/workhouses/
Between them, these two sites cover almost all the workhouses in Great Britain.
Coverage depends on the contributors, so there are descriptions and photos for most entries, sometimes even plans of the buildings, and some census returns (usually 1881, some 1891).
Another site with workhouse census returns is: http://www.census-online.com/links/ although these are mainly links to the above sites.
