Hi, can anybody please try and find these 2 children on the BVR records or the 1901 census.
On the 1891 census there is a
William Crocker c1888 South Tawton Bessie Crocker c1890 South Tawton
They're living with their Grandparents James c1844 South Tawton & Elizabeth Crocker c1845, at South Tawton Village.
I'd like to know who their parents were.
Thank you

Looking through the census` it looks as though this couple may have had at least 16 children of their own so I would suggest that the grandchildren were children of one of the older children as seen on the 1871 cesus:
CROCKER residing South Tawton Village
James 26 ag lab Elizabeth 25 john 7 b South Tawton James 4 - b. Sampford Courtenay Susan 3 - b. " " George 2 b. South Tawton Mary 9 mnth b." "
hope this helps sheddyg

Hi Sheddyg........thats the problem....James & Elizabeth had 21 kids in total !!!!!!!!!
So as we have'nt found ALL of the 21, 1 or 2 short, its a bit of a problem trying to find who William & Bessie belonged to.
Out of all the Crocker offspring we've only managed to find 1 Marraige...Susan Crocker and Edwin Batten....and i found her on the 1901 census yesturday with 5 kids that were'nt her husbands !!!!! they all had her surname "Crocker" and were born before she married Edwin.
These Crockers are turning into a right nightmare...
Thanx for looking

There is a birth recorded in Okehampton for Bessie Courtenay CROCKER in Mar q 1890 (5b/ 393)
This seems to be a popular combination of first names, but it might be worth considering!
Probably the most likely Bessie CROCKER in 1901 is an 11 year old servant. V difficult to be sure and she may have a different surname if her mother was previsouly unmarried.
kind regards, Arranroots

Hi and Thanx Arranroots, i think its going to be a case of finding birth ref numbers for them and ordering the certs next month. Out of 21 children it would be hard to even guess who the parents for William and Bessie would be...especially as 1 of the female Crockers had 5 kids out of marraige....just about sums my family tree up really...Ha Ha Ha, most of the women had kids and the fathers were unknown.

Well we could try the methodical approach!
Which births do you have and which marriage (s??) or deaths and we can try to find them in 1901. Tell me which ones you already have & that will save time.
Let's have a go!

After each of the Crocker names i've put when and where i've found them, as you can see, i've not managed to find them all on all of the census returns, females possibly married, BUT we are having problems in finding marraiges for them all....apart from Susan Crocker who married Edwin Batten.
Hope all the above made sense.............enjoy !!!!

Right!
I have mentally drawn a line under Samuel as being the youngest child likely to have had a child of his own in 1888 (although we can't be sure that William & Bessie share the same parents).
What did you think of the offerings above - do any of them look likely? Not sure about the BOW one as there is a COCKER family in Bow.
Possible marriage for Samuel in 1889 to Emily SPRAGUE or Mary Ann BATTEN, but haven't looked at census yet. NO! You said he is with parents later than that unmarried.
Just musing, but there is also a marriage for a Susan to ACKFORD or THORNE in 1884 - i wonder if she changed her name several times?
See you in a week or so LOL

Hi Arranroots
The birth of Bessie Crocker in 1890 looks like a possible, i'll order that cert next month.
Not sure about William on the 1901 census as the father says born Bow, Devon....all crocker kids were born South tawton or Sampford Courtenay.
Not sure about the George Crocker you found on the 1901 census, his place of birth is the same and the birth year is only a year off.....so it could well be him.
It would have helped if on the census returns the Crocker kids that were with their parents had Married next to them....but as not 1 of them did it does'nt help narrow down the search for William & Bessie's parents...and there's no saying that they are brother & sister....i was just hoping and that they would both be found together with parents on the 1901 census.....excuse me whilst i fall off my chair laughing !!! as if it was going to be that easy...

You are right about the Bow birth - this chap is married with in-laws HOOPER in 1891 and their William is with them. The only thing is that he now says he was born South Tawton, so who knows - it could be your man.

Hi again, Susan Crocker has kept her surname "Crocker" throughout census returns and always stated unmarried, up until she wed Edwin Batten in 1900, the kids she had before marrying him are :
Mabel Crocker c1892 Okehampton James Crocker c1894 Hollacombe Maud Crocker c1896 Holsworthy Hilda Mary Crocker c1897 Bridgerule Rosina Crocker c1900 Pyworthy
Not unless she did marry before Edwin, got divorced and went back to Maiden name Crocker

Modified my comment about James above.
I have seen women who are in service state that they are unmarried and "park" their children with a relative, but they do usually change their names. The births of Susan's children do not preclude her having had William and Bessie earlier (i.e. they are not born within 9 months of any of the others).
Shall we dig her up and ask her??
