Cornhills of Wokingham
« on: Friday 20 January 06 09:59 GMT (UK) »

I am seeking information about two men - whom I presume are brothers:

Joseph Cornhill, born around 1825
William Cornhill, born around 1826

Both give their birthplace in the 1851 census of Kent as Wokingham, Berks.

In 1851, Joseph was in Seasalter, Whitstable, as a baker, and William was a baker in Oare.

I cannot trace either of them in 1841.

William Cornhill's marriage certificate in 1847 gives his father as William Cornhill (deceased)

Contemporary with William Cornhill Snr is a Thomas Cornhill  of Oare, (born Faversham) a general labourer in 1851, who had children named Susannah and William. Susannah was witness at the wedding of William Cornhill Jnr in 1847. So they are likely to be related - perhaps cousins.

Any help anyone can give me in finding the births or baptisms of Joseph and William in Wokingham will be very welcome!

This is a difficult one because the only copy of the Wokingham Records are in Berkshire Record Office.  There may be a copy at Salisbury which was the diocese at that time.

If you have any more information which might lead to a local search helping I live in Wokingham Town.

It certainly is a difficult one!

It's complicated by the fact that I am quite sure that the Cornhill family living in Wokingham in 1825-6 were not Berkshire people, but were Kent strays, who may have moved there temporarily for one reason or another. There are a lorryload of Cornhills in Cambs and also in Kent, but no established families in Berks during that period.

The IGI has transcribed Wokingham records up to 1812, and there are no Cornhills at all.  And certainly by the time they were in their mid twenties, William and Joseph were in Kent, living in close proximity to other Cornhills, at least one of whom appears to be related - Susanna, who was witness at William's wedding in 1847.

A further complication is that I cannot find William and Joseph, or William Snr in the 1841 census. William Snr may have been dead - a Wm Cornhill died in Sep 1840 in Faversham. (And another in Faversham in 1843). But two 15-16 year old boys should not be too difficult to find! Unfortunately they have resisted all attempts in both Kent and Berkshire, even with searches on first name and age only, to cater for mistranscriptions of Cornhill.

Thanks a lot for your help - I have found the Berks Record Office website and confirmed that they do hold the records I need. So it looks as if I will have to make my first ever visit to a Records Office!

Regards

I have a number of books about Wokingham and did have a look for the Cornhill family.  I found no evidence that they were an established family in the area.
