Can anyone bring any clarity to what for me is a confusion of these names in these places during the 19thC? Somewhere in there a Sarah Whitmell Perridge married my great great grandfather John TEW. Any tips or previous findings very gratefully received! Stephen

Hallo, Steve, and welcome to Rootschat!
try this as a starting point: Marriages: June quarter, 1853, Towcester, vol 3b page 39 John TEW Sarah Whitmell PERRIDGE
The 1851 census shows:
HO107/2070, Rugby, folio 102 page 25 Crick, Northants Mary Whitmell, head, widow, 62, Farmer's widow, Crick - Northants Mary E Whitmell, daur, unm, 28, Crick - Northants Sarah Whitmell, daur, unm, 26, Crick - Northants *** Sarah Perridge, visitor, unm, 29, Adstone - Northants Sarah Cole, serv, unm, 17, General servant, Dallington - Northants
HO107/2070, Rugby, folio 102 page 24 Crick, Northants John Whitmell, head, unm, 56, Farmer 150 acres employing 4 lab, Crick - Northants Susanna Whitmell, sister, unm, 58, Crick - Northants Elizabeth Whitmell, niece, unm, 21, Crick - Northants William Judkin Perridge, visitor, unm, 24, Farmer, Adstone - Northants *** Sarah Powell, serv, unm, 18, General serv, Crick - Northants Edward Bradshaw, serv, unm, 16, Ag serv, Crick - Northants
HO107/2070, Rugby, folio 102 page 24 Crick, Northants Hymn (Glynn?) Whitmell, head, wid,74, Retired farmer, Crick - Northants William Whitmell, son, unm, 30, Ag lab, Crick - Northants
and Sarah's family:
HO107/1736, Towcester, folio 150 page 2 "Seywill"(?), Blakesley, Northants Elizabeth Perridge, head, wid, 61, Occupying 373 acres 13 labourers, Crick - Northants Elizabeth Perridge, daur, unm, 33, Adstone - Northants John Whitmell Perridge, son, unm, 26, Farmer of 24 acres 2 labourers, Adstone - Northants and five farm servants
*** to make matters complicated - William Judkins Perridge married Sarah Whitmell, June quarter 1855, Rugby vol 6d p487
According to the 1861 census John Tew was born around 1829 in Woodford, Northants. This is him in 1851:
HO107/1741, Daventry, folio 242 page 12 Woodford village, Northamptonshire Richard Walker Tew, head, mar, 31, Farmer 187 acres 6 labs 6 boys, Woodford - Northants Ann Tew, wife, mar, 35, Adstone - Northants John Tew, brother, unm, 22, Farmer in partnership with brother, Woodford - Northants Elizabeth Tew, daur, 2, Woodford - Northants and three servants
Hope this helps Philip

Thank you Philip so much for taking the time to enter and send on all this info – very much appreciated.
I have the marriage (certificate) of John TEW & Sarah Whitmell PERRIDGE (1822-1901), but my difficulty is in fathoming out Sarah’s ancestry. I know that she is the dau of Robert PERRIDGE (of Adstone, d.1844) and Elizabeth WHITMELL, b1789 (of Crick?), who married in 1814, and, as your census extracts show: she is the sister of Elizabeth (c1818) and John Whitmell (c1825, who marr Mary Ann). However, going further at the moment into either the WHITMELLs or the PERRIDGEs is beyond me! One day I think, all the names in the census will fall into place…
Wishing you a good week, Steve

Hallo, Steve
You're very welcome!
IGI (http://www.familysearch.org/) has some PERRIDGE family who may connect to Sarah.
Also Rootsweb (http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi) has several PERRIDGEs - many born in Northamptonshire.
Good hunting! Philip

I have some confusion. My gg grandfather William Thomas Iliff married Elizabeth Whitmell sometime in the mid 1820's in Crick. From 1851 census data, she had two children Martha Iliff born abt 1827and Thomas William Iliff abt 1829 when she was 38 and 40 years old. Her husband died Sept 1844 in Crick. From the census, it would state that her birth year would be either 1789 or 1790. My understanding was that her parents were John Whitmell and Sarah Judkins.
From other sources, Elizabeth Whitmell from Crick married Robert Perridge in 1814. From your input they had from all accounts two children Elizabeth born 1818 and William Whitmell Perridge 1825 . From the 1851 census, she was a widow with two children as stated above. From this data her birth year was thought to be 1789 or 1790. You stated that her husband died in 1844.
How many similarities/coincidences can actually exist?
Prior to the issue of the 1851, I felt this was the same woman married twice. But that can't be true because we have two different widows living with their grown children one in Crick and the other in Blakesley Northamptonshire in that census.
Do you have any information that could clarify this.

I have an extensive family tree of the Whitmells of Crick and can identify all the Whitmells that you mention and most of their connections with the Perridges. Are you still looking???
