1901 Census look up William Hopkins
« on: Friday 20 January 06 21:53 UTC (UK) »

Hi
This is my first venture into my families Irish genealogy. I am looking for a William HOPKINS born 16th April 1900 in Cullin (which I think should be Cuileen) County Mayo. No other info I'm afraid. I hope some kind fellow genealogist can help. Is there any site (free or pay per view)  that you can search Irish census records 1841-1901 similar to England and Wales?

Great site by the way.

Thanks in advance

Daven. Warrington, Cheshire.

Hello
This site: www.leitrim-roscommon.com has a link to 1901 census for some counties. Some parts of Mayo have been entered - including  Cuilleen but there don't seem to be any Hopkins there. Lots of other Hopkins in Mayo however.
There are other sites which have bits of information on them- you could try 'googling' Cuilleen or Hopkins,Mayo etc.
If you can get to LDS centre, you could search the Irish indexes and then if you have the details you can obtain a copy birth certificate from General Registrar, Ireland.
Good luck

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. Another place/sub district? name I have heard mentioned in connection with my HOPKINS is "Tubbla" does this mean anything to you?

You could try this:

just looking at it - it's got Hopkins baptisms in Ballintober - wonder if that is 'tubbla'

Lastly - this site has Griffiths Valuation index - which dates around 1850s so is a bit dodgy with your dates: only two Hopkins in Oughaval Parish- Cuileen is a townland in that parish. Neither Hopkins there but it's here for you!

Thanks for all that. I must confess to being a little confused with the place names/districts/counties and the availability of the information. Irish genealogy research seems much more difficult. I think I will try for the English (St Helens) marriage certificate for William HOPKINS to confirm his birth/ fathers details and then try again into the Irish records.

Kind Regards
