Hello,
I am looking for the Young family on the 1851 census.
I received the following information from a Rootschatter earlier today:
Andrew Young Head of Household Barbra Young (Harper) wife
Children:
James Young, born 1814 Barbra Young, born 1816 Christina Young, born 1819 Jane Young, born 1822 Robert Young, born 1824 Hanse Young, born 1826 Ann Young, born 1828 Margaret Young, born 1828.
All born in Stromness, Orkney
I found the following on the 1841 census for Stromness (Barbra Young was married & living in Hartlepool for the 1841 & 51 census)
Barbara Young, age 50 Christina, age 20 a Straw Plaiter?? Jean/Jane Young, age 20 a Straw Plaiter?? A Male, age 15 (possibly Hanse?) Ann Young, age 14 Margaret Young, age 10 and James Young, age 5 born in England
All living at Main St. Stromness
I hope somebody out there can help.
Thank you in anticipation, Louise

Can't help with the genealogy, but "straw plaiter" is definitely an Orkney occupation. I'm not sure of the time frames for it, but there was a period where a lot of very finely plaited straw (probably the same sort of oat straw used in the orkney straw backed chairs) was being produced for hat making. There were some samples of this not long back in the Orkney Museum, and its probably mentioned in the book that was produced at the time of that exhibition ("Simmans, Sookans and Straw Backed Chairs").

Thank you for replying Corinne, I hadn't heard of Straw Plaiters. It seemed an unusual occupation.
One day when the Children have grown up, we are going to visit Orkney, hopefully we will see examples of Straw Plaiters for ourselves.
Thank you again,
Louise

Thank you for the information on the 1851 census. It helps a lot. I shall now try & find the Hay family (also from Orkney. At least I think so!!) This hobby is all consuming! Thanks once again.

Hello Fiona,
No I don't have the Young family in 1861.
I was tracing the Hay family back. I found them in Hartlepool in 1851 & 61. Henry Hay & Barbara Hay (nee Young) always gave place of birth as Scotland. Then Henry Hay died between 1862 (youngest child) & 1871 Census. In 1871 Barbara gave her place of birth as Stromness, Orkney. I then found a marriage between Henry Hay & Barbara Young - 9th Dec. 1834 in Stromness. From there I found Barbara's Christening & name of parents (Andrew & Barbara Young). I found the 1841 census transcribed on a website (can't remember name off hand) with a Barbara Young (mother) aged 50.
I wanted to find them on the 1851 census as it always gives a little more information & also to see if Barbara was still alive. When you sent me the 1851 census it also showed that her father was still alive.
If you have the 1861 census & don't mind sending it to me I would love to see what it says about the family.
This is my husbands family. Barbara Young married Henry Hay & their daughter married into the Coxons. My husbands family always thought the Coxons came from Orkney, but I have only managed to trace them back to somewhere in Yorkshire (don't know where yet!), so he was happy when I could tell him that somebody in his family had come from Orkney.
I hope all the above makes sense.
Thanks for your help.
Louise
