Good Morning
Having been born, lived and worked most of my life in Petersfield I have just found out that it hasn't always been listed as being in the county of Hampshire.
Is this just an error or was it once part of Sussex?
I know we are right on the border so I guess a mistake is understandable but if it was once in the county of Sussex it may go some way to explaining why I am having trouble tracing some BMD records.
Many Thanks Adrian

Hi Adrian
Have just looked in the Great Universal British Directory of 1793 / 1798 with the following result
Petersfield is 55 miles from London, to which it is a great thoroughfare from Portsmouth, is a populous town, and not ill built. It has several good inns and stands in the middle of a country that used to abound in Oak Timber. It was incorporated by Queen Elizabeth and is governed by a mayor and commonalty, yet it has given privileges to the family of the Hamborrows, now descended to Mr Jolliffe who is lord of the Manor, and at whose court the mayor is now annually elected. Number of voters 154. Petersfield has a market on Saturday and fairs July 10 and December 11. Its church is only a Chapel of Ease.
