MORRELL Edmonton/Tottenham
« on: Sunday 19 September 04 06:56 BST (UK) »

Trying to find out what happened to the older siblings of my grandfather, Joseph (Jack MORRELL), son of Joseph MORRELL and Elizabeth VINEY (who later remarried Arthur BULLOCK).  The missing siblings are Jane (probably Jane Matilda b about 1900, Bill and Charles (born about 1901-1903).  Did any of them marry? or have children?

Also, I can't find a death record for the father Joseph MORRELL b 1875 in Wormley Hertfordshire, and died sometime between 1914 (last reference to him) and 1922 (when his wife remarried as a widow).  He doesn't seem to have been in the army so probably not a war casualty.  In 1914 he was still in the Edmonton/Wood Green/Tottenham area.

I now know the family was in the Edmonton Union Workhouse between about 1908 and 1915, with the children going to Chase Farm Schools.  I'd still like to know what happened to the oldest child (Jane MORRELL, b 1900) who went into service at age 15.  Did she marry? go overseas?

Thanks for that.  I already had those three down as probables, and having now seen the Edmonton Union records have confirmed their actual dates of birth, and that the ones you have mentioned are them.

The records for the Edmonton Union are all at the London Metropolitan Archives.  Some are microfilm and some are original registers.  What I found most useful to start with were the creed registers - these are a kind of admission register for both the workhouse and Chase Farm Schools, that also notes the religion of people admitted.   I went through all the microfilm for the kind of time period I knew was sensible and ending up confirming names of my grandfathers siblings, and their dates of birth as well as addresses where the family had been living at the time of admission to the workhouse.

If you want to do a bit of homework before going to LMA to check records, you can get the reference numbers for any likely records from their website index first, but the records themselves are not online.
