Banffshire Lunatic Asylum
« on: Sunday 22 January 06 18:28 UTC (UK) »

I have a relative who died here in 1905. Does anyone know where I could find out more information especially in relation to her admittance to the Asylum?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. Not sure if the hospital was Ladysbridge Hospital or not? It was recorded as 'Banffshire Lunatic Asylum'. Her name was Elizabeth Adam and she died 21st June 1905 aged about 45. She lived, prior to her admission into the asylum, in Marnoch (Aberchirder.)
I would be really grateful for any help that you could give me.

Thanks

Sorry Macduff, I've just checked the death certificate and the asylum is listed as being in Byrndie (difficult to make out, I think that's what is says?) Does this make sense? It is also referred to as Banff District Asylum.

Thanks

Hi Susie,

Sounds like it is Laysbridge Hospital, there is an area just out of Banff called Boyndie and thats where Ladysbridge is.

If you give me a few days, i'll see what information i can get for you.

It is Ladysbridge Hospital, and it is in the parish of Boyndie, a few miles west of the burgh of Banff. I believe that the records are held in the archives of Grampian Health Board (or whetever its name is after the latest reorganisation) at Woolmanhill, Aberdeen. I have failed to find a web site.

Hi Susie C

I have just looked on the net this minute for Banff Lunatic Asylum as I found a relative of my wife died there - Elizabeth Adam.  Then found your post.  Her half brother, illegitimate, is James McDonald.  Elizabeth, also illegitimate, seems to have had at least 4 children - surname of Isaac x 2, Currie and Sellars! Quite a girl.  Her parents are Alexander Adam and Margaret Anderson.   Margaret had James to Alexander McDonald.  James mcDonald had a son James, also illegitimate with a Jane Allan - that is my wifes line.
