Ruston/ Rushton-where did they go?
« on: Tuesday 24 January 06 18:04 UTC (UK) »

I've been puzzling over this family and would appreciate any ideas
in 1841, Charles Ruston, 30, baker
wife Sarah and children Robert 8, Sarah 6 and Mary 1 were in Thomas St Camberwell.

I haven't received the cert yet, but think wife Sarah died q2 1842 and its possible Mary died in q4

In 1851, young sarah is living with her grandmother, and there is no trace of Robert or Charles. I've checked deaths under both spellings in the interim period without success. In 1844, there is a baker Charles married to Elizabeth in Queens St Camberwell ( a wrong birth cert), but they too have disappeared by 1851

any creative ideas?

Hi

Just doing some housekeeping on the Surrey boards and going through the oldest posts. Now there are further resources available it gives a chance for old posts to be looked at again to see if the information can be found or the chance for posters to say whether this information has been answered and this topic can be completed. If it can be completed please put completed into the title of this topic and it can be moved to Surrey completed (it is never lost off Rootschat) giving more space for other topics to be looked at again by all of us to see if we can help. If you are still looking for the information perhaps you can now add further details to help others search again for you.

still a brick wall

Charles probably remarried, but I've lost him after 1841. Sarah died of tb in mar 1842, and although I haven't got the cert, I think it is mary's death registered in dec 1842 at newington

can anyone find Robert?

sarah married William Woodroff in sep 1853, Camberwell, but she has disappeared by 1861, though it is extremely unlkely that they would move out of Camberwell

any help appreciated

Hi,

How about this scenario:  By 1851 Robert would have been around 18.  Possibly he and his father (and perhaps a second wife) emigrated.   Sarah stays in England living with grandparents - probably as a bit of household help as well as granddaughter. After her marriage Sarah may have joined her father

I suspect that families who disappear forever from census records and have no death record probably have gone to live in another country.  But I know of no way to find out for sure.  Does anyone know of emigration records?

well-a possible, but they would be the only one so far in my researches. They were a close lost who lived in a half mle square of Camberwell for over 100 years. I think it is more likely that there is some dodgy transcribing which has made them disappear

Hi Monique

If that were the case and the family stayed in the Camberwell area then it would require not only censuses to be misenumerated and/or census indexes mistranscribed, but the civil registration index to be similarly compromised.

I've got more than a few gaps in civil registrations for my families, and I don't imagine I'm alone Grin only a handful across 5 generations could write, so it would be down to interpretation

Hi Monique,

A quick look at the US census for 1880 shows a Robert Ruston b. @1834 in England living in Wisconsin.  The US census isn't more specific than that about place of birth.

Since the name, date of birth and country are a close match with your Robert it may be worth checking for both Charles and Robert in earlier US  censuses.

Can't help with that I'm afraid as I only have access to the 1880 through the LDS website

thanks for that. Ruston is an unusual surname, so it may be worth further investigation. Its often mistranscribed as Rushton, and there are loads of those  Embarrassed
