St Olaves Southwark marriage look-up
« on: Tuesday 14 April 09 08:28 UTC (UK) »

Hi

Am trying to find a sibling of my great gran Annie Mabel Carter  - he was born in Gravesend/Northfleet Kent in 1884 - his father was John Thomas - labourer/chalk worker - I am working on tree together with my cousin and he found this entry and we are hoping that it is her brother who we know moved from the area - if anyone could advise we can't find any army records either :-

Charles Henry T Carter married Rose Munday - St Olaves, Southwark 3rd Q 1914

All the info from the parish record would be appreaciated if possible  - we know that he lived in Manor Park in 1944 and possibly Plaistow c1908.

Any info would be very much appreciated....Big thanks in advance Sarah

Hi Sarah

The 1914 marriage found in the GRO index specifies a registration district not a parish register. Within each registration district there will be many many churches and also the registration office itself. The churches that have deposited their registers will have deposited them at the London Metropolitan Archives. Not all churches will have deposited their records particularly the non-conformist churches. So it would be a matter of going to the record office and going through the quarter – the 3 months concerned, for all the possible churches in that registration district and if the marriage is still not found contacting all the possible churches (if they are still open) or the repository they have deposited their records in. Even then, if the marriage was actually held at the registry office then the only way of gaining the information would be to buy the certificate which would be by far the easiest option. You can obtain the certificate directly from the General Registry Office.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Other than this man’s marriage and death records and those of his children from the civil registration (searching on the mother's maiden name) you could search in electoral registers and in local directories held at Southwark local library if you had an address from the marriage certificate to search on? FreeBMD has two possible children’s birth registrations from the marriage.

coverage charts of the GRO index on FreeBMD here

I think you have to obtain the marriage certificate to ascertain for certain whether it is actually him if you don't know anything further about whether he married or had children, if there is no-one in the family who has knowledge of this. From the 1914 marriage on FreeBMD these two are the possible children from that marriage.

Births Sep 1915
CARTER  Ellen F  Munday  St. Olave  1d 313

Births Mar 1924
Carter  John C  Munday  St.Olave  1d 256

It is not Rootschat policy to request further information about potentially living people (Data Protection Act covers this) as both these people could just potentially still be alive.

It would then be a search through the GRO death index for his possible death. The website Findmypast holds the GRO indexes.

Manks thanks Valda for your help....

Unfortunately as he went out of the area (Northfleet) I guess the only thing is to apply for marriage cert! (I have been lucky having ARK parish records to immediate hand)
There are several CH Carters in the local (Southark/West Ham) directories so too ambiguous - I'm fairly new to this (Nov 2008) and although have done pretty well so far - still have lots to learn!!!!

Many thanks again...I have now removed 'Not completed'.
