emigration question
« on: Monday 20 September 04 11:28 UTC (UK) »

I have an ancestor who Emmigrated to Canada beteen 1885 and 1901.

Does any body know how I can find information on this matter?

If anyone is available for look ups, his name is William Gosling, living and probably born in Lincolnshire, born 1860 and I know in 1885 he was married to Ann or Annie, but I don't know if she went to Canada.

Thanks very much

Hi

had a quick look for you and this one came up

Name:    William GOSLING
Year of Record:    1885
Source/Event:    Passenger List: Port of Halifax
Comments:    Arrived on the 'Sarmatian'
Age:    23
Reference:    National Archives of Canada: Microfilm Reel No. C-4512 page 3

I know the age is out a bit but you never know with ancestors.

Thanks very much for your reply, I have just checked my records again and he was born December 24th 1861, so this is very likely, but did you see his wife in this record?

I know he married April 8th 1884 and they had a child  22nd February 1885 and I also know that thier son was living with his grandparents in 1891, but no trace of mother or father.

Thanks very much.

Meathead,
I came across this William Gosling on the 1901 Canadian Census, living in the province of Alberta.  A couple of coincidences (his name is William Gosling, and he was born in December 1861) so thought I would bring it to your attention:

District:   TT ALBERTA (#202)
Subdistrict:   Grassy Lake v(1) Page 2

16       13   Gosling William   M       Head   M   Dec 4   1861   39
17       13   Gosling Laura J   F       Wife   M   Jul 7   1871   29
18       13   Gosling Angie C   F       Daughter   S   Mar 31   1898   3

The information can be found here; you can also access the actual images on this site:

Yes this family is his second family, I would like to know who he went to Canada with, I know from my husbands grandmother that he was sent to Canada, I never even knew he left so soon after having his first child and god knows where his wife went.

Thanks to you too.
