Poorhouse
« on: Thursday 04 May 06 20:00 UTC (UK) »

Would someone from Iona end up in the combination poorhouse at Islay or was there another poorhouse/workhouse in the area ?

I have tracked  an ancestor (Hugh Stewart)via census births marriages and deaths from his birth in Tiree(1814), marriage to 1st wife in Iona (and subsequently 2nd wife as well) where he had the trade of a shoemaker.
The 1881 census has him in a dwelling called Kentra with wife No 2 and children ... possibly reasonably prosperous as they have a domestic servant .... 1891 still a shoemaker but census now shows dwelling as Kintra and it appears to be in Iona.
His death record in 1898 has him recorded as a pauper and former ag lab at the age of 84 and the death is reported by the Inspector of Poor ... location of death Kintra.
Now checking the maps there is a KINTRA on Mull but given the 1891 census which seems to place KINTRA on Iona is there any one there who knows the island and can provide any further information

Hi Falkryn

I'm not aware of a Kintra on Iona. Apart from Kintra in the west tip of Mull opposite Iona and Kentra Bay just west of Acharacle, I haven't come accross that place name elsewhere. Hopefully some one with detailed knowledge of the Island can advice.

On a separate point, if Hugh Stewart was a registered pauper, which he would appear to be from his death cert., have you thought of trying to find a poor relief application for him? Probably for the period 1891-98.

Regards.

Thanks for the reply .... I hope to check the poor relief entries out soon ...... The only Kentra I can find nearby is the village on the Ardnamurchan Peninsular .... strangely on re examining the death record - the reporter Alexander Mcgregor is also the registrar and signs after his name "Bunessan" which is also on the south west tip of Mull.
I wasn't aware of Kintra on Mull ( I know there is one on the south west tip of Islay)

Any excuse will do ... its one of those parts of the country I haven't seen in years  Grin

Now found that there was a poorhouse on Mull itself ... just west of Tobermory .... I wonder if he went there or if he was kept on Iona .... ah well that trip to the area looks like a cert for now ... only need the weather to improve  Grin Grin

I'm trying to get to Moidart myself, so know what you mean! My gg grandmother was born a few miles from Kentra Bay, family from Dalnabrek.

Hopefully, if available, the poor relief records will reveal all regarding your Hugh. In the meantime, to whet your appetite, why don't you contact the Argyll & Bute Archive Services at Loghgilphead for further info.
