My Tobin family came to NZ in 1865 under the Waikato Immigration Scheme on the "Eveline". Information would suggest that this vessel was from Cape Hope and that the passengers were mainly Irish families who had settled there earlier.
Can anyone tell me more about this settlement in Cape Hope? Why did this Irish immigration take place? Was it some type of scheme? When did it take place?
