COUNDON
« on: Monday 20 September 04 20:21 BST (UK) »

Hi

Would love to hear from anyone researching the name COUNDON.  I do not have much information but here goes.

Harrison COUNDON born c1855 Sunderland.  In 1891 he is living in Zion Street with wife Ellen & 2 boys Harrison aged 5 & Thomas aged 6.  It is possible that the boys were the children of Ellen from a previous marriage but the census shows their surname as Coundon.

In 1901 Harrison was widowed living in Spring Garden Lane with sons Alfred COUNDON born c1892 & M A COUNDON born c1896.  There were also 2 lodgers Thomas & Harry BRANTON aged 14 & 17.

If any of this information rings a bell, please contact me.

Regards

Hi Lewis 1C  Smiley

Thanks for contacting me.  I have my fingers crossed that you can help.  It is a bit of a long winded story so please bear with me.

My husband's grandfather was Frederick BRANTON born c1881 Sunderland, he had 2 brothers Thomas & Harry.  To date I have been unable to find the births but a copy of Frederick's marriage certificate(1899) showed that his father was also Frederick but deceased.

A search on the 1881 census shows a Frederick BRANTON married to Ellen, her brother Joseph GARNETT was also present.  I believe Frederick & Ellen were the parents of Frederick, Thomas & Harry.

I have trawled the 1891 census & only found 1 Frederick BRANTON matching his age 9 living with his aunt & family.  No Thomas or Harry found.

As stated in my original message, in 1901 census I located Thomas & Harry BRANTON with Harrison COUNDON widowed and the 1891 census shows Harrison married to Ellen with 2 boys by the name of Thomas & Harry.

My theory is that Frederick senior died (have located a death in 1890) and Ellen married Harrison Coundon.  No marriage record found as yet, so suppose it is possible that they just lived together as husband & wife.  I believe the boys named as Thomas & Harry Coundon & shown as his sons were Thomas & Harry Branton.  There were no boys by the name of Thomas & Harry Coundon with him on the 1901 census.

As I say, this is just my theory.

I would dearly love to either prove or disprove this theory.  I only want to be able to confirm the parents of Frederick, Thomas & Harry so I can trace further back on my husband's tree.

Any help or information would be really appreciated as I have been searching for them for about 2 years now.

Do you think you can help?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Regards
Sue

Hi Sue,

Thanks for the reply, this is quite interesting stuff!

I saw what you posted on the site and spoke to my dad about it, and he confirmed virtually all of the info as being correct. So I'm 99% certain that this is my family. It's an uncommon name and there aren't many of us.

Harrison (Harry) Coundon mentioned in 1901 is my great grand father. I'm told he worked as a stage shifter at the Tivoly Theatre. The "M A Coundon" is I believe a slight error of some sort and is actually Mathew Joseph Coundon who is my grand father. His brother Alfred Coundon later moved to York.

My dad didn't know much about Ellen other than she either died or they were divorced. He seemed to think that they were married. The Spring Garden address is what he belived to be a Salvation Army hostel or such like.

With regard to the Branton connection, he did say that Mathew Coundon did at some point live with some people called Branton who lived in the Millfield area of Sunderland. He does know several Brantons himself, knowing a George Branton best.

I'm not sure if this helps but I can ask more specific questions of him now I know where your interest lies. The evidence does seem to point to the two Branton/Coundon boys being the same individuals.

Regards,

Lewis.

I know this was a long time ago but here goes...

Hannah Coundon (1888 - 1975) married John Murtha (1885 - 1952) in 1911. John was living at 6 Zion Street Sunderland with his uncle Joseph in the 1901 census. They had five children and there are about 25 blood descendants in my tree.
Hope this helps.

Hi
The Coundon's all appear to be descendants of Thomas Coundon 1726 & Dorothy Galley 1727  from Sunderland Co Durham. I don't know who moved to York. If you could tell me their names I could maybe work it out if they were born before 1901. I have a tree on Gene's reunited with most of the Coundon's . Lewis on this site is also a direct decendant of the Coundon's & Is the master of the tree Smiley

Hi
The youngest Thomas Coundon I have in my tree was born 1887. So I don't think it is your Thomas. May I suggest you join Gene's reunited. There is a number of us on the site have Coundon relatives. Thomas and Alfred are family names, so I'm sure you will track them down. I tried the 1901 census but it said to many matches. If you could get Thomas marriage certificate it would tell you his fathers name which would be easier to find in the census. I'm guessing Thomas was born after 1901

There is a few Alfred Coundons. I wonder if yours could be Alfred 1907-1977. Born in Sunderland His parents were John Coundon1873 & Emma Tynemouth 1871. Do the names John, Nora, Joseph Cuthbert or Cyril mean anything to you. They were Alfreds brothers and sisters
