Hello Diane,

I think this is them, living at 28 Front St, Rathven, Banff, in 1881 with Barbara’s father

James Petrie, a widower, aged 64 and born in Bellie, Banff, occupation General Labourer
Barbara Horne, married, aged 24, a Sailor’s wife born in Ruthven and daughter to James
James Petrie, son of James, aged 21, a House Carpenter, born in Enzie
Charles Horne, aged 6 months, grandson to James and also born in Enzie, Banff.

Hi Diane

Just noticed you were looking for Enzie births.
Have you looked at rgu-sim.rgu.ac.uk/history/family_history.htm.
It covers the entire genealogy of the Port Gordon, Rathven, Enzie villages. Fantastic stuff.
It might take you back a generation or two more than you have.

I believe that there was one in 1831 in some parts but it doesn't contain any useful info from a genealogical point of view i.e. no names, birthdates, places etc.

The 1841 census is really the one where it starts to get interesting, contains Names, Ages (but be careful, in most they round up to the nearest 5 years - i.e. 37 would become 40), Occupation and Birthplace - mostly but some just say born outside census county.

1801. but the 1801, 1811, 1821 and 1831 recorded numbers only, not names, so the earliest one which is any use for genealogy was 1841.

You can search the 1841 census of Banffshire at http://freecen.rootsweb.com/
