I agree with you, Riley.  Although we're good at all this research,  Grin I think it's beyond us to find out physically how that sampler arrived in Auckland.
What has transpired from all this, is that the sampler has returned 'home'.  We know more about Hannah and her life. Living descendants have ben found and drawn into the chase.  We've all been captivated by the story and probably expanded our family research skills!  I think Hannah would be well pleased  Wink  It's a sobering thought to picture 13 year old Hannah stitching that sampler more than 150 years ago, probably by lamplight with her family around her.  Did she have any idea what a stir that very same piece of embroidery would have in the year 2005...I think not!
RIP Hannah & thanks for an entertaining few weeks.

Hi Tania,
Thanks for adding to this thread & yes, offering it to the museum was the right thing to do, if you hadn't we would never have known about it Smiley
Hopefully you've enjoyed reading the information which has pieced together Hannah's life and painted a portrait of her which makes her more than just a name & date.
It's also added to the information that the museum had, so that might be included when they make it public...far more interesting!
Many thanks Tania,

Jane

Hi, yes I have enjoyed very much finding out about Hannah. I am pleased she lived to a good age!
All I had managed to find out about her was the names of her parents and the date of her marriage.
The sampler is showing its age but the needlework really is beautiful and I find it hard to beleive someone would throw it away.
thanks to everyone on this site,
all the best

It's lovely to see you here on Rootschat, thank you so much for saving the sampler Smiley

Happy new year everybody,

I have been back in touch with  Roy the family historian for the Breyleys in Australia he replies as below

To All,

I have done a little research on my great grandmother, Hannah (Wallop) Breyley, and her eldest son Alexander, married Alexandria Percy, and at the time of Alexandria's death she had sisters who were in New Zealand and one brother in Newcastle (NSW, Australia I believe).

So maybe, and only maybe, as this is the only connection to New Zealand, Hannah could have given the sampler to her daughter in-law, who in turn may have given it to her sisters who then took it to New Zealand.  (That is possibly the best explanation you will get!)  I know no more of Alexandria's sisters in New Zealand.

I hope this has answered or solved this mystery.

This message may be passed on if you wish.

Yours, Roy Breyley.

So the game is a foot again to quote Sherlock Holmes

Hi everyone,

I still hope to have my query regarding Hannah and the sampler published in The New Zealand Genealogist, so that might elicit a response.

Just a thought, but if someone could provide me with the full text of the sampler I'll edit my submission as it will probably help to jog memories.

The text is a bit small, but my interpretation is:

"And that from a child thou hast/best? knows the
holy scriptures which are able to make thee
wise ? salvation through faith which is in
Christ Jesus.
Hannah WALLOP aged 13 years 1851? Castle Combe"

If others could please confirm my transcription is correct and give me the missing word, I'll edit my submission to The New Zealand Genealogist.

I think this thread is going to be one that "won't be ignored" Smiley

Hopefully Tor's query in The New Zealand Genealogist will have a positive outcome.  Fingers crossed Wink

Greetings Tor  Wink

Google brought up this:

"And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus" (2 Timothy 3:15).

Cheers

A reply to my email sent to John the curator at Castle Combe Museum,

Here's the web site  http://www.castle-combe.com/

'Yes, it has been a mervelous story and I am amazed and grateful that you
tracked down Tania also - I think it will add to her feeling of having done
the right thing by donating the piece to the museum. I have already (as you
have probably seen) updated the museum website and the Castle Combe homepage
with the story and I think we will add the information we have gathered to
the display in the museum. There will be a museum meeting shortly (it is a
small, volunteer run establishment, hence there are only two meetings a
year!) and I will propose we do a display then. I will let you know on
progress and provide you with a picture of the result if it goes ahead.

Once again, a marvelous effort by you and your friends!

Best regards,

John Mackelden'
