....... Not my intention to make this a Rootschat challenge but found this whilst browsing around and thought good enough to share.
http://www.castle-combe.com/  If it doesn't open directly into the page, go to Village Museum & then 'Castle Combe sampler discovered in New Zealand'.

If anyone does find out anything please contact the museum directly & of course let us know what's been found Wink

Thanks Goggy & Helen. Helen, many thanks for contacting that GR member, fingers crossed Wink
Well, as I said, I had no intention of making this a Rootschat challenge, but the lure of the chase proved too much for me & I was off rummaging through the internet Embarrassed  This is what I've found;
IGI - Samuel Wallop bap. 25/6/1815, Chippenham, Wilts.  S/o James & Sophia. Possibly her father baptised as an 8 year old?   Married (1) Sarah Broom 5/5/1834 Castle Combe.

1851 at Pig Hill Castle Combe  HO107/1836/53/12
Samuel Wallop  42  tailor & drappers appren.  born Castle Combe
Susanna  42  born Bath
Mary  15  born Castle Combe
Hannah  13     ditto
Eliza Ann  10   ditto

1861 - still at Pig Hill (forgot ref)
Samuel tailor & collector of taxes
Susanna
Eliza Ann  18 unm  pupil teacher

I found Hannah in 1861 by putting in her details but no surname and found,

1861 - Brightling Sussex (forgot ref again Embarrassed) Brightling St, School House
William Briely 23 school master born Bath Somerset
Hannah Briely  23 school mistress born Castle Combe

Marriage found courtesy of Allan on the Wiltshire board,
September quarter 1860, BREYLEY, Chippenham (5a 69)

Went back to 1851 HO107/1836/51/9  Castle Combe
John Breley  48  police officer  born Devon
Catherine  48
William Breley  13  born Bath Somerset
Elizabeth  11                       ditto

So, if Hannah went to NZ it was in the name of BRELEY and after census night (7/4/1861) but before census night 2/4/1871 as I can't find them there 'nor in 1881.

I've tried a few sites for NZ immigrants but they're normally indexed ship by ship so quite a task!

Any brilliant ideas warmly welcomed Wink

Hi
Found Hannah age 3 in Bath in 1841 with Susanna Ashley 30 Dressmaker (full details over on Wiltshire board)

Also
Death Sarah Wallop Mar qtr 1841 Chippenham

Marriage Samuel Wallop with Susanna Ashley on same page Sep qtr Bath 1841

No sign of Samuel in 41 or William Breyley (various spellings) are they hiding somewhere together Huh.

Don't see how this helps with your quest but difficult to stop looking Grin

Thanks Goggy,
Usually Google is my first port of call in matters such as this, but found zilch Sad

Have established from Kelly's Directories 1866 & 1867 that William Breley & Hannah were not school master/mistress at Brightling National school as they were in 1861.  In the above dates, it was a William White.  Of course they could have moved on to somewhere else in the UK, not necessarily packed their bags & sailed for NZ but I'll be bearing that information in mind when I search passenger lists,

Did find a Thomas Breyley who emigrated in 1872 - 18 years old aboard the SS Wyoming - however that was bound for New York.

Wondering how many different versions of spelling Breyley, Brieley, etc there are !

I have had a look on FreeBMD and there is only one birth of a Hannah Wallop from Sept 1837 when records began to December 1839.

Hannah Wallop
Chippenham
8/284
March 1838

I would be happy to say this was her, as Castle Combe comes within the Chippenham area. However, I should point out that she could have been born before registration, earlier in 1837.

But it is not the most common name in the world.

Regards

Louise

Hello,

Alcrighton suggested that I have a look at this puzzle as I respond to enquiries on the ‘Emigrants to New Zealand’ board.

I’ve looked through the Passengers to NZ Ports via Melbourne AUS fiche series, and I’ve found a William BRELEY aged 29 arrived Otago in 1861, and William BYERLEY aged 21 arrived Otago in 1863, but both were single.

I cannot find any Hannah under any spelling variant of the surname.

Hundreds of immigrant ships passed though the port of Melbourne and were required to submit a list of their passengers which have since been compiled by the NZ Society of Genealogists, but hundreds of others made direct passages to a New Zealand port, with lists of passengers published in the local newspapers.

After about 1860, in Otago anyway, complete passenger lists weren’t published in the newspapers because of the upsurge in emigration following the discovery of gold. Even before that, often only paying (Unassisted) passengers’ names were published, with Assisted passengers (e.g. those whose passage were sponsored by the Government) mentioned only as a total number.

I suspect the BRELEY’s may have been in that group.

I've found that hunting through on-line passenger lists, usually gleaned from contemporary newspapers, is wasteful of time because they are only indexed by ship or port of arrival, and many ships passenger lists were never published, with the only published record being the arrival of the ship.

Regarding the puzzle, my suggestion is to investigate the provenance of the sampler. Ask The Village Museum at Castle Combe when the sampler was discovered, and on what rubbish dump! I wouldn’t travel far to throw property away, so it’s likely the search starts in the town where the sampler was discovered. If The Village Museum still has contact with the discoverer, can they provide any more details?

Another suggestion is to write a detailed letter with a photo of the sampler to the NZ Society of Genealogists http://www.genealogy.org.nz/ for inclusion in their journal The New Zealand Genealogist to see if any descendants recognize either the names or the sampler.

Regards, riley

Riley, thanks for your in-put on this.  Researching in the colonies is something new to me so the last few days has been a steep learning curve Wink

I have contacted the Castle Combe Museum, but so far no reply, so will try again and ask for the details you suggest which was my intention as I don't even know WHERE in NZ this sampler was found!  There's always the chance that this couple never went to NZ, maybe Hannah gave it to a friend or relative who was emmigrating as a reminder of home Undecided

After trawling hundreds of passenger lists I'm going to turn my attentions back to the UK & see if I can find a trace of them here.

Many thanks,

Jane

Hi Jane
I've had a thorough search for William and Hannah in 1881 but no luck. Of course one or the other of them might have died and  Hannah say  remarried - no Hannah born Castle Combe showing in 81 either- and emigrated under a different name. With the name having several possible spellings and William being a schoolmaster who could have moved anywhere it would seem impossible to find a death - dozens of possibles for William alone Cry
Will give the puzzle some more thought.
