A little about the maiden voyage of the 'Tiptree" 1856.
Hannah, William & Alexander travelled steerage.

The ss ‘Tiptree’, a vessel of some 1650 tons, belonged to London owners of whom Mr. R. Alexander was one of the principals. The builders of this ship intended her to be a model ship not only for sailing qualities but also for strength and capacity of passenger accommodation, and she was so named after a contemporary model farm owned by a Mr. Mechi, a wealthy agriculturist. She sailed under the flag of the White Star Line, a Liverpool company owned by Pilkington & Wilson, well known for their fleet of splendid ships.

The captain was a Mr. J. Pinel, and as this was apparently the maiden voyage of the vessel, there were many dignitaries including the owners, who boarded her on Saturday 19th September 1856. The saloon was a large one, beautifully arranged, and would be occupied on the voyage by thirty lady and gentlemen passengers. There was an unusual height between-decks, whilst down below was the steerage, comfortably holding about 300. In all, including second-cabin passengers there would have been 400 aboard. They assembled on deck and were medically examined, and all pronounced to be in good health. They were mainly English, Scottish, Welsh, and Irish, with a few Germans and six Italians. At one o’clock they dined on meat, potatoes, biscuit, and soup which were evidently greatly relished.

At about 3 o’clock they gathered for prayers and hymn singing, followed by a sermon from the Reverend James Buck from Liverpool. The following day, Sunday, 20th they set sail. The weather was somewhat cold, but the air was still and during the morning they again gathered on deck for prayers and singing. At noon the guns announced her departure, and she left for her long voyage amid cheers from all aboard. I must say I admire James for his courage. I have been on a replica of the type of boat here in Liverpool, and I was not impressed. Conditions were exceedingly cramped from what I could see, and the lighting was provided by little more than flickering lamps. This was, of course, below decks. I am sure the first class passengers would fare much better. However, a journey by sea in the winter, lasting over three months, with a five-year-old and a seven-year-old, must have been horrendous.

Wow, you've been busy Jane - I don't know, you put up the dekkies and look what happens Grin  The museum at Castle Combe will have to enlarge their exhibition at this rate. Cheesy

Wonder what the 13-year old Hannah would have made of all this?  Bet she didn't think her sampler would cause such a stir.

Will email Kevin in Australia to let him know the latest developments.  He has some photos of some of the Breyley children so I'll have to ask him if he can post them here so we can put faces to names. Wink

JAN - doing a bit of arithmatic, I think Hannah got pregnant on the voyage, as I think they must have left London early September 1862....think of the morning sickness plus a sea voyage...no perhaps I wont think about it Shocked

JAKI - Looks good, and has gone down on my notes Wink

HELEN - It would be nice to think that Hannah was our guiding hand on this & I think she's tickled pink about the whole business Wink  Like you, I was thinking, 'wouldn't it be nice to see a photo of Hannah!'  there must be one somewhere...come on Hannah, what about it?

I'd just like to echo the sentiments already posted here about this being a fascinating thread...better than a soap or a good book that's for sure.

Rootschatters certainly know how to pull out all the stops, well done!

Tid bits from internet searching.

From Penrith City Council

Breyley Street was named after the Breyley family who lived on a small farm in the area. One son was a local photographer.

From Penrith NSW biographies,

Arthur BREYLEY 1868-1946 - Musician & photgrapher.

Well, let's hope that's NOT the end of the story.  It would be nice to hear from a direct descendant of Hannah & maybe learn of a family member who did go to NZ, possibly carrying the sampler with them.  On the other hand, the sampler might have been purchased or found by a total stranger in Oz and found its way to NZ that way.
I'm still hoping for a photo of Hannah Grin

My only concern, as you narrow down the likelihood of who it was in the family that went to live in NZ, is that you will be drawn inextricably to one single descendant and that will be the culprit who threw our precious sampler in the skip!!

One day soon I think we will know that the person who chucked the sampler away is none other than Mr X Breyley or Miss Y Breyley and they will have to live with our all knowing about it for the rest of our lives.

It is like being on reality TV!
