1725 - Could a girl of 13 get married?
« on: Tuesday 31 January 06 11:30 UTC (UK) »

Some ancestors married in Montrose in 1725 - I found a record of the baptism of the bride in 1712.

If this is the bride - I know it is possible that she was baptised sometime after her birth but it made me wonder if a girl of 13 would be able to marry at the beginning of the eigtheenth century?

Looking forward to hearing your comments.
Regards
Sarah

not sure about scottish law, but in england they could until 1929

I posted this in answer to another thread elsewhere
in england

Until raised in 1929 the legal age for marriage was 12 for girls and 14 for boys. Until it was lowered to 18 years old in 1969 the age where parental consent was needed was 21 years of age, therefore the certificate may state the ages of the bride and groom as either, 'Full Age' or a 'Minor'.

That's really interesting and I suppose quite shocking

I wonder if it was similar in Scotland?

Thanks for replying
