Born Kincardineshire, died ???
« on: Tuesday 31 January 06 13:37 UTC (UK) »

I'm trying to trace any details there may be available on my ggrandfather David Henry Mitchell.
He was born 12th May 1836 in Kincardineshire but worked as a Shipwright in Calcutta from 1864 until retirement in October 1889.
He married Margaret Eleanor Stanley in Kidderpore India on Jan 28th 1871 and they had several children, some born in India, some in Scotland.
His wife and family seemed to have returned to Britain by the time he retired and his wife died in 1915 in Southwark, London. Marriage certificate of one daughter suggests that Margaret was a widow by 1905 but shows as still married in the 1901 census. This suggests that David Henry died between 1901 and 1905 but there are no records in IGI for his death either in England, Scotland or India.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where I might search further, anything would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Rita Johnson (nee Mitchell).

Hi Rita,

Welcome to RootsChat.

The IGI contains virtually no death records, so will not help you I'm afraid.

Where did Margaret live in 1901 - England?  And David may have died in England?  In that case you need to search the GRO death indexes from 1905.  They can be searched online at
http://www.1837online.com/Trace2web/HomeServlet

This is a pay per view site.  Then you can order a certificate if you wish from this site:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

At present you can search the indexes free also at:
http://www.ancestry.co.uk but you will need to register before you can use this facility.

If he died in Scotland, then you need to search the Scottish GRO death records.  This can be done online at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Again this is pay per view, but here you can actually view the record online for a small payment.

Good luck.

Nell
