ELSE FAMILY
« on: Thursday 08 December 05 23:22 GMT (UK) »

Hi all,

I am new to this list and hope someone can help me. I have the ELSE family who lived in Mansfield Woodhouse  on the 1841 census.  John Else aged 58 and Sarah Else nee??? aged 57. Sarah was born in Nottingham according to the Census, John wasn't,  so he could have been born in Derbyshire as there seem to be quite a lot of the Else surname in that area. Someone said that John and Sarah may be buried in Pleasley Vale, which comes under Derbyshire, but is only three miles from Mansfield.  I know they died between 1841 and 1851 and I would be very grateful for any help with this family. They had children, Henry, Joseph, Harriot, Mira, and possibly Samuel.

I haven't been able to find a marriage for John Else and Sarah.

Many thanks

Dorothy

Tricia and Sunflower,

Thanks again I have replied on the Notts board.  Sarah who died aged 36 is too young to be mine, so I have to keep looking for her death, the search continues!! Bryan thanks for your info too.

Best wishes

Hi Dorothy,

My 3g-grandmother was Grace ELSE (1810-1877), born in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts, daughter of Isaac ELSE and Catherine MOSELEY.  She had a sister Mary (bapt. 1810) and brothers John (b. 1819) and Abraham (b. 1821).

I'd be keen to hear from you if you ever find a connection with my lot.

Regards and best wishes,

Hi Brett,

It would be nice if we could link our Else family. Else is not that common a name, so there might be a connection!!  Unfortunately I do not know a lot about my Else family before 1814 or therabouts. We have been looking for years for John Else and Sarah's ? marriage.  On the 1841 census for Mansfield  it said that John was NOT born Notts, but Sarah was.  He could have been from just over the border in Derbyshire?  I only know of the children born to them, one of them being Henry Else bap 23rd February 1817 at Mansfield Wesleyan Church. He was my third Gt Grandfather, his son Frederick being my second Gt Grandfather.

I live in Fleetwood Lancashire UK. If you find any connection I would be pleased to hear from you, and likewise if I find any connection to your Else family, I will let you know.

Best wishes

Yes, there are a number of Elses in Dby.. my ancestor James Marriott (1701-83) married an Anne Else (b. Bonsall, 1705) in 1723 in Ashover, his home village.
She died in 1769, having borne James a son & 2 daughters, but alas I have no other details on her .. yet.
As for the Notts connection, I have noticed a number of my ancestors' families have worked there, or married a Notts native .. it has puzzled me, but I haven't yet worked out why (apart from simple proximity).
My cousin (a far far better genealogist than I) may have more on that branch of the Else family; if anyone wants more, please let me know ..Gordon.

Hi Gordon

Many thanks for your message. I have searched for many years for John Else. On the 1841 census for Notts he is living with his wife Sarah in Pleasley Vale. Sarah says she is born in Notts and John says he is not.  it is very confusing as part of Pleasley was in Derbyshire!!! I cannot find a marriage of John Else and Sarah in Notts. Their first child was born around 1813, that was David Else. It is possible I would think that John was born in Derbyshire probably about 1785 ish.

Any help on this ongoing mystery would be very much appreciated.

Best wishes

Dorothy
