If anyone likes a bit of a challenge I would be really grateful for a look-up on some of my husbands gypsy ancestors. I've got quite a bit of info on them from 1861 onwards but am missing the 1841 and 1851 census returns. I'm well aware that I might be asking a bit much here as I can't be certain where they were or if they even got included in the census . They seem to have travelled a bit but then some settled in Kirton in Lindsey.
My husbands 2xGt-Grandmother is Sylvestia Smith (1838-1917) who married in Kirton in Lindsey in 1855. Her parents and siblings were:
Dennis Smith Eleanor Smith (nee Charlotte), born c.1817 Gamlingay Fenwick Sabina Sidney (born c.1835 Nettleham) Sylvestia (born c.1838 probably Cabourne or Caistor area) Tennant (born 1840 Irby-on Humber or Caistor)
Then there are Eleanor Smith (nee Charlotte)'s parents (and I've listed what I know of her siblings in case it helps identify the family):
John Charlotte (born c.1796 Gamlingay, died 1860 Kirton in Lindsey) Sophia Charlotte (nee Smith) (born c.1793 Skevent, Leicester, died 1887 Kirton in Lindsey). Sylvester (born c.1827 Folkingham) Elizabeth (born c.1828-1830 Billingham/Binbrook) Levanci (born c.1829 Oxfordshire John (born c.1834 Lincoln) James (born c.1835 place unknown)
Thanks in advance for any help.
Jo.

I agree....a challenge! Here are some fragments:
1851 England has 26 Charlot, 37 Charlott, 77 Charlotte.
The only family I can see in 1851 Lincs is in Ulceby, HO107/2118/29 pg 10, "encamped":
Sistance Charlot, head, 30, gypsies, skewer maker, b Cambridge .
Lemontena Boswell Charlot, 26, wife, cabage net maker, b Lester( their spelling)
Joseph Charlot, son,7, b Lincoln Boston
Solenia Charlot, dau,5 ,b Lincoln Louth
James Charlot, son ,2, b Lincoln Lincoln
If you look at Folkingham parish records - a link from Genuki /Folkingham- for your Silvester Charlotte 1827 entry, you'll see it listed as Silvester, bap 1 March 1827 son of John and Sophia SMITH.
No progress on Smith in 1851, though I note an 1861 entry for a Dennis Smith gypsy family in Thorne , Yorks RG9/3525:
"List of persons not in houses":
Dennis Smith, head, 40, cork maker, b Leicestershire Dennis Smith ,son,20,cork maker, b Abye(?), Lincs George Smith,son,15,b Kirton Israel, son 11,b Saxilby Lincs Caroline(relationship blank), 23, unm, b Bardley Tennant, son, under 3 months, b Kirton.
There is a UK-ROMANI-L email list on Rootsweb

Thank you for looking John. I thought it might be a bit of a challenge.
I'm going to investigate the Dennis Smith you've found in 1861 a bit further. Tennant Smith (born 1840 Irby on Humber) married Caroline Lucy. The earliest child I know of from that marriage was born c.1872 so I am wondering if this is the same Caroline living with her future father-in-law and an illegitimate son of Tennant's. If so then you have found Dennis Smith for me.
I'll check out the UK-ROMANI-L list and the Folkingham parish registers.
Thank you,
Jo.
