My grt grt grandfather Michael McNiff(e) was born about 1810 in County Sligo and moved to West Galway about 1830. Wife: unknown.
His children were Stenson, Philip, Timothy, Jane, James and William. Does anyone know what part of County Sligo Michael might have been born ?

Hello Leslie,
The extracts of Griffith's Valuations which took place in Sligo in 1858 show that there were McNiff families in the following parishes ... Aghanagh, Cary, Kilmacteige, Kilmactranny and St Johns. The Valuations are on John Hayes failteromhat.com website.
There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.
1. Denomination. 2. Parish 3. Townland.
You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Hello ellogena,
I could be wrong, but I thought that my William might have born about 1830, which would make him too old to be your grandfather. Unless, of course, my William was your great grandfather and the name William was carried down through the family.
Do you have the names of any other McNiffs/McNiffes from the mid- 1880's ?
Leslie

Hello John,
My great great grandfather was Michael McNiffe who was born about 1800, I believe in County Sligo. The surname has an "e" at the end, but there may be various spellings,eg. MacNiff,MacNiffe, Cunniff and Cunniffe.
I do not know his wife's name, but their children were: James b. about 1825 married Mary Diamond William b. about 1830 Stenson b. about 1838 d. 1909 [deaf and dumb] Jane b. about 1845 d. 1908 Timothy b. about 1852 d. 1928 married Laura Alberta Matilda Harris [my great grandparents] Philip b. about 1858 [a teacher to the Martin children of Ballynahinch Castle, Co. Galway who went to the USA about 1874]
Do any of these names relate to your family tree ?
Leslie
