Powick Lunatic Asylum
« on: Thursday 02 February 06 11:25 GMT (UK) »

Hi
I am wondering how I can find the register of patients at this institution in the early 1900's. I am not local to worcester so is there anyway I would be able to access this info. other than visiting Worcester records office?
I shall look forward to a reply
Kind regards

Hi,

You could contact the Worcestershire Library and History Centre by email and ask them what they have, WLHC@worcestershire.gov.uk

Bear in mind that the records are probably subject to 100 year closure order.

regards

Maybe you could check the census for Powick. The hospital was demolished about 10yrs ago and is now a posh housing estate.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your reply.I have been in contact with the Worcestershire and History library centre and they have been very helpful in giving me the name of a person able to arrange access to these records, so as soon as I can get to visit  Worcs.I will look them up. I don't think the census would be any use in this instance as my Grandmother was on the 1901 census living with her family. She died of T.B. in Powick hospital in 1910 and my interest is in finding out when she was admitted.
What a surprise to hear the site is now developed with posh housing. It seems that is happening  almost  everywhere. Some of the most expensive housing in Lancs. is on a similar site near us!!
Best wishes ,

The National Archives website lists the records for the hospital held at Worcestershire Record Office

http://tinyurl.com/zuwwg

These records includes the admission and discharge registers
1845 - 1963

and the clinical patients casebooks
1852 - 1969

From a few casebooks of C19th (second half) TB patients I have seen admitted to mental hospitals I found they were often admitted not long before their death. The reasons I have seen for their admittance to a mental hospital were symptoms such as depression, religious mania etc (fairly understandable really for anyone suffering for some years from terminal TB).

With the Freedom of Information Act the 100 year closure ruling no longer applies. Record Offices are much more flexible.

Regards

Valda

Hi Valda,
Thank you very much for the infomation; it will be helpful in accessing the correct records.
I know very little about my Grandmother except that she and her family moved from Wales to farm in Worcestershire, before the birth of her 3rd child. I know also that her first and maybe only language was Welsh.  She was just 45 at her death but I have no idea how long she had TB. No doubt the records will enlighten me. On her death certificate TB is given as the reason for her death.
Many thanks for your help,
Maureen
