Captain of Humber ferrys
« on: Thursday 02 February 06 14:37 GMT (UK) »

Hi All

My great grandfather - George Arthur Cutsforth b 1863 Hull- was listed on the 1901 census as a Captain on a steam barge ferry, I understand from family members that this ferry was one that sailed across the River Humber from Hull to possibly Barrow or Barton maybe even Grimsby.  Would anyone be able to tell me how I would be able to find out which ferry it was and if I'd be able to find out anything about Georges career, I believe he was dismissed for being intoxicated whilst in charge of a vessel !!!!

Thanks
Fiona

George also appears to have been a shopkeeper?

There are lots of references to the P.S Grimsby on the internet

Here's one that also gives some context & a picture

Hi Arranroots

Thankyou for all the info you gave and links.  The people you gave researching George are among my contacts.  Thanks for the info on George in 1892.  On the 1891 census I was able to find his wife and family although he was away from home (it states  'husband, sailor').  So obvioulsy sometime after the census he became a shopkeeper and then returned to the sea before 1901.

Thanks again
Fiona
