I can see Edward aged 23 in Ocle Pychard on the 1851 census.

In Norton Canon in 1851 are the following:

John Merrick - 25
Ann 60
Ann 27
Ellen Maria 25
Thomas 21
Thomas 53
William 17
James 54
Harriet 27

Are these yours ?

thanks for swift reply to merrick post...can`t say whether these merricks are related to edward....only have edward ,  his wife ann (nee jones)   and the 3 children  annamaria   marianne   and william taylor...but they have to be related in some way, being from a small village,i presume...edward was born 1827...could possibly have left this household in norton canon,as he would have been 24...could be his mother/father and bros/sisters..very curious now....thanks for info...it`s appreciated...allan

Is Anne's maiden name right as I can only find a marriage in 1849 of an Edward Merrick to an Anne Taylor in Dilwyn on the IGI.

I wonder where she and baby Anna Marie were in 1851

thanks ebn...firstly i think you are right regarding anne...she was born in dilwyn in 1829..someone gave me her name as jones...mother mary jones born 1798 kingsland hereford and father william jones 1800 staunton on wye. i was given the details of edwards children from a census in ocle pychard..(1861?)..anne is not on census, but 3 servants are...i presumed she had passed on...in 1851 census there are only 3 years between thomas and edward...in 1881 there are 5 years?? would this be right ..if so i`m convinced the 1st e-mail you sent me was edwards parents and bros/sisters...what do you think??....regards and thanks....allan

i`ve had info off census for edward and children in ocle pychard..can`t remember where i got childrens dates of birth...info i have is as follows  edward merrick 1827 norton canon married ann jones 1829 dilwyn (fatherwilliam jones 1800 staunton on wye and mother mary jones 1798 kingsland all hereford)..children anna maria merrick 2/6/1850........marianne 3/11/1852........and william taylor merrick 16/1/1855....but the anne taylor from dilwyn you found seems more likely with it being williams middle name...bit of a novice at this and it gets confusing....regards....allan

Can anyone locate them on the 1861 and 1871 censuses then please ?

If you get the marriage certificate for Edward and Ann then you can confirm the 2 fathers and occupations , addresses etc.

This will be at:
Leominster Register Office
The Old Priory
Leminster
Herefordshire
HR6 8BQ

Certificates at £7 each.

I think Edward and his brother from Norton Canon are both dead by 1891.

I take it that it is 100 acres Edward has, an awful lot to farm on your own at 23.

And only 1 farm labourer employed  too !

Add to this how far Ocle Pychard is across Herefordshie from Norton Canon, I thnink there is a mystery here of some sort, Susan can you find Edward in 1861 and 71 at all ?
